truck registration questions

I just bought a truck on 5-17-08 and I planned on getting the truck restored and then go register the truck, change the name on the title and all. I went to the courthouse and they said the registration taxes were gonna be 10% instead of 5% if I did it now. They're not very nice and helpful people there so I thought I'd ask on here. I already tore down my truck to the frame, turns out the frames been cut and welded and some parts bent. How hard is it to register the truck once I have done all the restoration work on it? If I decide to build my own frame, would that be a problem? Thanks for any help.

Re: truck registration questions

not that this would happen to you, but......

I bought a basket case Triumph TR6R several years ago. I thought I'd wait until after I restored it to get it registered and tagged in my name. Bad thing was the guy I bought it from didn't register it either, basically a "skip title" situation.

After approximately 1 year and $7000 dollars worth of a show winning restoration, I go to register it.

let's just say I almost wasted a year and $7000 worth of dough because the dmv disqualified my title application on the count of the original owner did not sign the title. just out of sheer luck did I find the original owner and he was nice enough to sign it off......

that story brings me to this. get it registered (if you can) before throwing hard earned money on it.

Re: truck registration questions

Do you have a title? Do you have a tax form signed by the seller? You're going to need those two items here in Texas. If you have those two items, you shouldn't have any problems. You don't have to register it(yearly state windshield sticker); but you do need to get it transferred into your name.
I wouldn't spend another penny on it until I had it in my name.

Here's a link to download the tax form which needs to be signed by the person you bought the truck from. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdotefor...vletConfig.xml

Re: truck registration questions

The Transfer Notification is just a form to let the DMV know that the seller has sold the vehicle. It's supposed to help keep him from being liable for any damages if you didn't transfer the truck into your name; and had an accident. Or maybe you rack up a bunch of parking tickets, he would be liable for them.

You really need to get the title from him. Have him sign it on the front and back.

Re: truck registration questions

putting it in your name and paying the tax will only do one thing... it'll make it yours. Legally, at this moment, that is not your vehicle. You are just dumping money into someone else's truck.
You don't need to register it, nor have it inspected.

Unhappy Re: truck registration questions

Well, if he's signed off on the title and the tax form, take those forms back to the tax office and get it transferred into your name. It'll take about two weeks to get your title in the mail.
He probably dated the forms is why they want to charge you 10% instead of 5%. You have so many days after purchase to transfer the papers, and then they want to penalize you.

so transfer the title and pay the taxes and then I'm good to go until the truck is restored and finished and I get my inspection stickers and all that right?

I already have some pictures of what it look like now, torn down to the frame with small stuff left on it like the exhaust and rear suspension and some other small hoses. The engine came disassembled in the cab and no tranny included. Pretty good progress for 12 hours huh? I might just start a build thread once I know if I want to build my own frame or buy one for $200 and c-notch it and powdercoat it.

Re: truck registration questions

I can't believe the DMV people were rude and not helpful.(insert sarcasm here)They are goverment employees and from my experience they seem to think that means they get more money for less effort than people on welfare.I know there are exceptions to that but I have yet to meet them.
BTW The worst of them I have found are in the "Friendly" down home south.
