Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

i sence a cady buildupthread comming up........
if youre planning on upping the power in a later stage i would suggest a big block there mush stronger build in stock form but allso heavier .
i believe the 427 had a forced steel crank and was internaly balanced .
the newer 502 crate engines where forced too i believe (not sure ) and come with edelbrock heads .
if you want economy get a small block , the stock blocks whont stay together as good as te big block if youre going to try to get more then 600/700 hp out of it
they flex too mush and cause the crank bearings to wear prematurely you want to do that get a dart block and land right in the big block pricerange

the midway would be a 383 HT with either vortec heads or AFR heads a victor intake holley carb and dough torley 3Y headers makes nice power through the whole rpm range

well if this caddy "powerplant" is soo hot lets see some hp numbers!? hmm lets see for example: in 1976 the caddy 500 engine produced a whopping 190hp and 360 ft lbs... whoaa!! boy do these girls fly! HAHA!
and lets see some aftermarket parts for it, what happens when things break.. you will have to buy from a dealer because no one makes parts for it.

I'm not saying it won't work.. sure it'll run decent and might make some power. but i'm sure you'll have to do a number of handy dandy things to get headers to work (if they even make any for it), mounts, pullies, distributor may have clearance issues(not sure). and really, you are nuts if you recommend putting in a caddy 500 over a BBC 496 or similar, that is unless you get a running caddy motor for free and you have no cash.

same reason why everyone builds a 327 or 350 and not a 305! parts and perfromance. but thats just what i would do.

[QUOTE=smoknbarrels;2772313]you said it yourself!!

The 500ci caddy will make building a 550hp engine on pump gas look easy and even uses parts which are easy to obtain. Here's and article with a build-up.

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...lac_500ci.html

With that said, however, if someone really wanted to make a big displacement engine, I would recomend finding a 427T truck motor and building a 525ci out of it.

Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

I figured since gas prices are so low, I would remove the 350 and install and BB (all factory bracketry 402) boy is it painful and the pumps. not an everyday driver, but still fun and torquey......

Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

I'd go with the 454 small block.

Like this: http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...0&autoview=sku

I'm sure there's other options

yes i did, but i also qualified the statement by saying the big block Chevy would be a better option If money was not an issue Its hard to get a Chevy big block going for the price of a running Caddy engine. Plus, hp's are nice, but TQ is what gets a bloated pig of a truck movin down the street.

Putting in a Caddy big block (which is actually more compact and lighter than its Chevy counterpart) is no different than using a Pontiac or Olds 455

Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

agreed it is lighter and made from better steel and some company called bullydog or bulldog makes parts for them and there cheap to get since noone use them , performanceparts are tough to get though

Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

here are some caddy resourse's for ya's and remember when you look at horsepower rating's they were way under rated from 1971 and up a stock 1970 caddy 472 produced 400+hp with500+torque and with research i have found that my 1974 500 caddy only produce's an average of 30 less hp do to the lower 8.1 compression as to the 1970 472 with 10.1 the first one is a really good site http://forums.500cid.com/index.php or www.cadillachighperformance.com and there are a ton of people using them in everything you could think of

Re: BBC VS. SBC...... Whats the call?

If you like headaches and spending LOTS of time doing it, put the caddy engine in it. If you want to make it easier on yourself, get all the stock parts and put the Chevy big block in it.

This has turned into quite the debate. Lol... I guess it should be expected.

I'll go back to what I said on the first page: "Opinions are like elbows when it comes motor combos".

Let's compare apples to apples now. A 1976 454 had 215 HP and 340 ft lbs. The 1970 Caddy 500 produced 400HP and 550 ft lbs. It produced more torque than any production 454 of any year, including the LS6, which with 11.25 CR, a Holley 780 carb and a solid cam would have been terrible truck engine. Also a 454 never, ever came close to touching the 500 Caddys in economy, as odd as that may seem.
