will this look stupid?

i have a 69 custom lwb that has both the top thin trim and the wide bottom trim....im wanting to replace it but really dont want to spend $400 to $500 for all new stuff....my question is,ive seen some trim(dont laugh) in the JC whitney book that almost looks identical to what is on the truck,only its not metal and it uses adhesive....does anyone think this will pretty much look stupid or will it look ok?....i think it would look the same from a distance,and this is going to be a daily driver anyways

Just remove it, It'll all be the same in the end and you won't have to worry about removing stuff or icky tape when waxing. just my 0.02

Ah, well if it is cheaper, and not on a show circuit, I think that it is your decision. If you think it looks like OEM and you'll like it, then go for it, but if you want to go to a paint shop, and have a nice black stripe put down it, it'd be good too. Whatever the case may be, it's your truck and you have to drive it everyday. No one else has to like, except maybe your wife(cringe).

I've seen the adhesive stuff on cars before and it is never straight. If it is the same stuff I'm thinking of, it comes in rolls and nobody ever seems to be able to get it on right. If you do use it, just make sure you take your time putting it on.

yeah,thats been the problem ive seen with it before....always look kind of wobbly or something....maybe i should just fill in all the holes and paint it some other way

You could find a good painter to "paint" some trim on it. Kind of an illusion. It could look pretty cool. Of course, you still have to fill the holes and pay someone to do the graphics. Why not look into rechromeing or polishing your current trim?

I knew a guy 10 years ago that just put a thin pin-stripe of the dominate color in place of the upper and lower trim. Looked real good.(his was blue and white)(Blue top, thin white stripe, thin blue stripe, white, and the same for the bottom)

I have seen the airbrushed trim, and it looks great...thinking about it myself, but I have already clear coated...

I think that roll out trim will look fine if you take your time and do a good job. It is factory trim on vehicles in the 80's. Here's my dads 84 K10 with the factory lower rubber roll on moulding.

19mike69 Let me get this straight no pun intended when you take off you chrome your going to be left with the holes, so you can't just paint a strip on it right? I'd put the plastic on It'll look good, heres what I would do, run a strip of masking tape all the way down your truck from front to back, so you can get it nice and straight, the tape you can play with, put the tape on where the bottom edge of the trim is going to go, so you can use the tape as a guide, I think it will look fine, your keepin it alive!

you are talking about useing the tape as a guide to put on the aftermarket stuff?....never thought of that....i tell you,the stuff they sell at jc whitney looks a whole lot like the original stuff...i think it might look ok

Please don't do it! Paint it a solid color or something- just don't put that stuff on!

Put on some chrome strips, a giant CHEVY sticker on the windshield, tweety bird floormats, Yosamitee sam "Back off" mud flaps, fake chrome mirros and you'll be set!

The trick to getting the stick-on trim straight is to lift the 'wrapper' from an inch or two of one end, stick that end on, pull it taught to the other end, and peel the wrapper off as you go keeping the trim close to the truck. Hard to describe but it's easy if you see it done.

Common miststake is try and put it on an inch at a time - it gets wavey. Kind of like driving - steer for a spot in the road 50 yds ahead, not 5 yds.

After having said that, I think you shoud cover the trim holes with those fake bullet holes.
