Question temp gauge question.

I am having some trouble with my temp gauge. As soon as I turn the key to the on position the needle pegs!! Am I missing a ground or something? I replaced the sending unit and that still did not fix the problem. If someone could shed a little light on this it would be very helpful. Thank you.

The wire connected to the sending unit is probably grounded somewhere between the sending unit and the guage. Inspect the wire carefully.

My temperature gauge use to bounce back and forth like crazy. I cleaned the wire attached to the sending unit and haven't had a problem since.

I have same problem with my longhorn. I checked the wire, I finally bought another gauge (aftermarket) and mounted it below the dash. I think the resistor on the gauge itself is bad.

When you take the wire of the temp sender and touch it to ground it will show a overheat situation on the gage. What it sound like is that your wire is shorted at some place or at the sending unit. Take the wire off the sender is it still showing hot then the wire is most likey shorted to ground if not then I would go to the gage. Ed ke6bnl

Get another sending unit then. The parts guy either gave you the wrong one, (dummy light part #) Or the parts guy's computer lied to him causing the part # problem.
Do you have it mounted on the intake, or on the driver's side head? It should be on the head.

Longhornmail, The sending unit is in the head (drivers side). I have tried two diferent sending units as of now and they both work the same way. is there some way to tell between a gage unit and a light unit?

I'm sure there is, but I don't know what to look for.
