68 GMC C series questions

how do you tell the diff between a truck 427 and the car 427? What do 68 tow hooks look like? and the tach dash has air gauge too, but also has the hand throttle and the choke, is this common on these vintage trucks?

Re: 68 GMC C series questions

air guage was very common, it was required on all C/60 and bigger if equipped with air brakes.
But it was NEVER offered in 10 - 30 series.
The hand throttle was avalible, but not common.
The choke was on 99% (ball park guess) of 10 - 30 seris trucks in 67 and 68.
The 427 can be ID's (I'll assume it is assembled) by stamping/castiong numbers, and something on the front of the engine... has to do with the T-stat housing and hoses.... but I can't remember what it was. A photo and we'll be able to tell you pretty much instantly.
Can't help you on the hooks.

Re: 68 GMC C series questions

The 67-68 tow hooks are more of a C shape, and the later ones are more of a J shape. I think i have some pics about hooks in the faq.
The truck 427 may have a dual thermostat housing.
The tach dash would be from a bigger truck it sounds like.

Re: 68 GMC C series questions

Truck 427's are tall blocks. Yes on the dual thermostat intake manifold, and usually had a high mound water pump too (very obvious). GMC didn't use truck 427's until late '69, all GMC 4500 and larger trucks had V-6's before then.

Re: 68 GMC C series questions

C series was just a guess. It's a tandem axle GMC with 427 badges on it. All the stuff listed is on 1 truck but not sure of the year.. It's sitting next to a barn and the farmer says he's done with it????yea right! I'll try to post pics that I have on my phone..

Re: 68 GMC C series questions

Are the tow hooks the kind that mount flat on top of the bumper? If so, those are pretty common and not worth much.
I think quite a few of these trucks had the manual throttle also. Keep me in mind for any emblems that may be available. Eric
