I still have a few outstanding issues from that reman carb.
1. The carb kicks into high idle on cold start and doesn't kick down (even when you hit the accelerator a second time) until the truck warms up. 2. The truck is idling a little high even when the truck warms up. 3. The carb is using too much gas. 4. If it is really hot outside a get just a little dieseling when I turn the truck off. |

Let's say the advance is OK, what else (maybe on the carb) might it be? |

OK, I really need to fix this carb issue it is really beginning to be a problem now. It is idling so high on cold start that it actually does a slight burn out when i put it in gear. Oh and the distributor is fine. This is a carb adjustment issue i just am not sure how to adjust.
On cold start when I tap the accelerator twice it should kick it down and it doesn't. Also it seems to idle slower as the truck warms up. Both of these things would indicate to me that it is the choke or fast idle neither one do I know how to adjust. Plus, I thought that a reman carb should be properly adjusted from the factory. UPDATE: It is definitely something to do with the kick-down on the choke. When I manually activate the kick-down on the choke it idles fine when I reach over and activate the accelerator and give it a little gas, the butterfly opens up and it idles full tilt again. Is this something that can be adjusted or should i take this carb back? Last edited by SilveradoDude; 07-05-2008 at 01:00 PM. |

Well I haven’t gotten them yet but I just ordered these two books from Amazon. All the reviews look really good and it looks like they might be able to answer your question.

Well, I think the mystery might be solved with the reman carb. The carb the guy gave me (upon cross-referencing it) turn out to be for a manual. I exchanged it for a carb with AT (and AC) w/dual choke pull offs. Anywho I hope this does the trick.

Re: Issues with reman carb install
I must have done it wrong, if you copy and paste the url it takes you there. Anyways the books are: Rochester Carburetors by Doug Roe And How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors (S-a Design) by Cliff Ruggles

Re: Issues with reman carb install
I highly recommend Cliffs book. He is on a Pontiac forum that I frequent, he too is a Pontiac guy. Knows his carbs and always gives good advice.
Do you have an electric choke, or is it the type with tubes going into the manifold, or the type with the large round housing? What size engine do you have? Has it had any cam, intake, head, or exhaust changes? As for using too much gas and dieseling, does it also take a long time to start after it has sat more than two days in a row? Most remans are IMHO junk, the parts go in a bin, then they just put any part that fits back in. Doesnt matter if its right or not. That doesnt mean all of them are junk, but I have only had one reman work ok on a customers car. Best advice is to learn how to rebuild them properly yourself. They arent that difficult to do, but you need to pay attention to details and have a good guide to go back and reference. |

Re: Issues with reman carb install
Parts store rebuilds seem to be hit and miss. Some are rebuilt with the parts that are for that specific vehicle, and some are mis matched garbage. I got a reman Q-Jet from Holley and it worked quite well. The tune was perfect for the stock cam and it got great gas mileage.
These Q-Jet rebuilds are really through the roof though. I see an average price of about $300 or more. Pretty bad deal for used carburetor when you can get a really nice NEW carburetor for less. I think rebuilding your original carb is really the way to go these days.

Re: Issues with reman carb install
UPDATE: Got my new reman today, slapped it on and that thing purrs like a kitten. It idles and runs like brand new, I haven't had it run this good in a couple of years (knock on wood). Boo Ya, I am so happy I don't know what to do right now! Thanks for all of the help!

Re: Issues with reman carb install
I would agree but i just don't have the time to mess around with rebuilding my own carbs. The last carb rebuild i did was a single barrel Rochester for my 65 Tempest. I just have too many projects around the house and in the garage. I think the reman prices are outrageous ($300) but what are you gonna do?

Re: Issues with reman carb install
Either rebuild them yourself, or find a very reputable person, who can rebuild a quadrajet in there sleep....to do it. I have a guy in ontario that does mine, it cost me $300 cash, and all I have to do is set the high, and low idle
Quadrajets are much harder to rebuild, than a holley, carter, etc...carbs. But once you know how to rebuild them, and how they work....there like butter, and are a very reliable carb Duro
