72 Tranny Crossmember question
This one has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it.
I have a 72 Chevy C-10 Cheyenne long bed. We just finished completely rebuilding the motor and putting on a set of long tube Dougs Headers. Problem...the exhaust pipes are going to hit the tranny crossmember so right now I can't hook the exhaust to the headers. Does anyone know of a aftermarket tranny crossmember for this truck that will clearance the exhaust pipes and allow me to tuck the pipes up high enough to mate up to the headers? Thanks guys!! Re: 72 Tranny Crossmember question
watching this one. I'm in the same boat. Headers end about an inch too high to go under the x member.

I'm sure my neighbors would like me a LOT more if I was able to hook up the exhaust pipes before test firing the truck this weekend. hehehe 'course they aren't big fans of me right now anyways with the 71 Chevelle and the stroker motor in it. heh It runs from the headers to a set of header mounted glasspacks and then dumps out the side. hehe |

Re: 72 Tranny Crossmember question
i think this one may work for you:
http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_097.html i would do more research first or call them to get measurements. you can use a 350 crossmember on a 700r4, the mounts are the same

Re: 72 Tranny Crossmember question
actually something like this may work better, its a universal tranny xmember
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku just search for transmission crossmember on summits website, they have a bunch of universal xmembers that bolt to the frame, i have one on my 55 truck, they have different x members that have different drops too, so choose wisely

I see you have a Chevelle as well. hehe Same here. I have a 71 Chevelle in the driveway right now with a 396 stoker motor in it (effectively a 434) and that thing is a damn beast. |

Re: 72 Tranny Crossmember question
tranny crossmember is the same for a SWB, LWB, C/20,30,10.... they are all the same.
If you weld, it would be easy to modify the piece. If not, you can take it to someone who does. |

Re: 72 Tranny Crossmember question
This company has a nice trans crossmember and engine mounts, along with a lot of brake items.
www.performanceonline.com I purchased the engine mounts and crossmember and am very happy with them. 454 with a 700R4 on a 69 swb frame. No issues at all. |

I think it should clear. My headers are tucked up pretty close to the body, but I think the new x member should give me enough clearance to run the pipes over the top of it. Thanks for all the help guys. Soon as I get some time tonight or tomorrow I'll post up some pictures. The motor came out looking pretty sweet. We just have to fix one small oil leak on it (forgot to plug up something. hehe) and then do the first break in this weekend. Dale Leonard |
