Iam pretty sure I already know what everyones awnser is going to be but iam still a little curious. My question is which exhaust is better performance/sound and what do you guys all prefer flowmasters or glasspacks? I currently have glasspacks and am thinking of switching them out for 40 series but havent decided yet.

go with something different. moflasters over too over done. I would try spintech, slp, or even hooker aerochambers.

A Flowmaster with catalytic converters and iron manifolds is overdone. There's countless V8 trucks that roll off the lot straight to the exhaust shop. It sounds awesome, but as said before it's almost too popular now.

Flowmasters with long tube headers and no catalytic converters is in my opinion, a very different sound than your usual brand-new-truck-with-a-Flowmaster sound. The best way I can describe it is you hear the full range of sound the motor produces, whereas iron manifolds and catalytic converters just leave you with a mellow low end rumble.

i have 40 series flows and dont care for them because you can hear every single little sound your truck makes. i spend have my time driving with the stereo off asking what was that?it drives my wife crazy cause she says she didnt hear anything.

i currently have long tubes, no cats, 2ft glasspacks (looks like anyways) and straight out the back 2.5in pipe.

i'm going to get rid of the glasspacks and go with dynomax's race bullets turned down before the rear axle. i think that will sound killer with my 400 cam'd. and they were cheap at 39 bucks a piece.

but if i had the money i'd go with long tubes and the 40 series flows i think.

If you have a lopey enough cam, anything should sound good! I have heard mufflers with no baffles preform better, I think Magnaflow and Borla (??) have straight through designs with baffles around the inside only. Probably get the best performance, I dont know about sound though!

I use dynomax straight thrus on the buicks and my mustang. You're gonna be shocked at how quiet they are. I like the tone, they drone a little though. More raw than a 40 series, but quieter.

I have long tube headers, 2 1/2" Dual exhuast through an H-pipe, Magnaflow mufflers, and turndowns over the rearend. I love it!!! before I had exhuast manifolds that flowed into flowmasters and turn downs well before the rearend, it was way to loud, I could not even talk to anyone riding with me without yelling.

Magnaflow makes a nice muffler too.

edit: i have sbc lontubes and 3" custom exhaust that dumps before the axle that someone can have if they want it. It is off my truck from the 305

I had a set of long tube headers, dual 3" pipes and flowmasters with no cats dumped before the axle on my 82 with a stock 350. That thing sounded mean.... but resonated into the cab and you always had to have the radio turned up way too loud to even hear it and you couldnt carry on much of a conversation. I am still holding on to it though for my next pickup more or less because I already have it and that is money I wont have to spent. I would go with 2.5" pipes though.. IF I were to build a new exhaust system I would probably go with Hooker Aerochambers.

Before the flowmasters I had a single Magnaflow which wasnt bad at all, but I only had a single instead of dual so it may have sounded better in a dual setup. The Magnaflow is going on my Jeep.

I quess I would ask---Do you want the most POPULAR or do you want to try something that is different or UNTRIED. I would call Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or Edelbrock for a brand overview. I talked to the suppliers when I built my stroker motor for my 84 SWB and put a 2 1/2" dual exhaust system on it, and I cannot say that the Flowmasters have done me wrong. The sound is good, the performance is great, and the quality is good. I went with the POPULAR because it is a good quality muffler. I will not go back to glasspacks and the lower cost Magnaflows cost me too much in replacement costrs on the daily driver truck. They rotted out every two years at about 21,000 miles a year. The Flowmasters have not done that. I replaced the Magnaflows on the DD with a Flowmaster and it is at 2 years and climbing for use.

I like my Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. They are quiet at idle with a nice low tone, but when you step on it, they are known. They only seem to drone when the truck is cold and I'm pulling a hill in the morning.

My Buddy runs stock manifolds with 3" pipe and no cats through Hooker Aerochambers and dumps it out the rear end on his '88, 454-powered dually.

Sounds seriously bad ass. I can't even describe it. It just sounds "right", y'know? Not too loud under normal conditions, but when He's on it, people notice him.

That's what I plan on running.

hmm well from what piecesparts says the flowmasters sound to be the best decision all around. By the way Iam running a stock manifold straight pipes and not exactly sure what the headers are wwould like to know but i just recently bought the truck.

What magnaflow muffler are you using that rots out? Eveyone I have used was stainless...and were not "low cost"

I was thinking the same thing. That is why I like Magnaflow, because the are stainless steel and I think that Flowmasters are overpriced.

I'm running longtubes with (real!) Cherry Bombs.. They sound great at idle, but you get into the throttle, they have that "braaap" sound. I really don't like it. I'm probably going to go with a pair of Magnaflows(which I've had before) or SuperTrapps which are tuneable for sound.

I had flowmasters with the small block. The only thing was, with stock manifolds and 2 1/2" pipes straight back past the axle, it sounded like just another Mustang on the road. Don't get me wrong, it sounded great!

But, when I stuck the BBC in, I wanted something different. 3" Dynomax Headers out to turbos and pipes turned out behind the rear wheels yielded a very deep throaty mellow sound so all you really hear is the 552 lift / 286 duration cam in the 454 doing all the talking. But, when you stomp it, it sounds awesome at 5000 rpm.

I guess it boils down to personal preference.
