Dana 44 rear parts sources? 1962 GMC - posi, axles, bearings, drums, etc?

I've got a 62 GMC 1000 Panel, and am hoping to find a good source and good part #'s for the Dana 44 rear. Most parts databases confuse the chevy rears with the GMC models, so I don't know what to trust.

I think these have the coarse spline, but I'm looking to maybe upgrade to a posi and maybe get rid of the 3.07 for a 3.23-3.42. Not sure. Swapping in a 5 speed tremec. What I really want to do is find parts sources for the axles, brake drums, brake parts, bearings and seals, etc. I'd love to swap out a 30 spline posi if I could find one that would fit and off the shelf axles from somewhere in the right width and diameter. I have heard that the carrier bearings in these GMC rears were different than a standard (newer) Dana 44, and that parts are hard to come by.
I want to swap to 5 lug, but figured I'd probably have to redrill the axle flanges and drums. Want to make sure about parts availability before going that far.

Thanks,

Chuck in Ohio

Hi Chuck,

You and I are on the same path. I want to make similar upgrades to my 64's Dana 44. Here's something from Auburn that looked interesting:

http://auburngear.com/aftermarket/pr...6EPCString3%3d

Notice how it points out that the 70 and earlier had 19 teeth on the spline. Of course, if you swapped the carrier AND axles, you could go to the later 30 spline.

Let us know what you decide to do, because I haven't proceeded yet.
