Quick Question about spindles - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

ok guys heres one or you.
are the spindles from a 71-72 disk brake set up the same as a 73 and up? in other words can I use the rotors and bearings from 73+ on the 72 disk brake set up?

No. 73 up 1/2 ton trucks actualy have two different size spindles for light duty or heavy duty. WES

As a side note, I much prefer the '73 & up style control arms because they have rubber bushings and give more cushion in the overall ride. I also feel that they don't wear out as quickly as the earlier style that have metal to metal contact and act as a crappy screw. However, others might have differing opinions based on their experiences. If you do replace the earlier style control arm bushings, just be sure to replace inner & outer bushing pieces since they will strip out within a few miles if you only do one or the other, and you'll be back to square one. Don't ask me how I know.

so then when I convert my 67 to disc, I should go with the 73+control arms and spindle. Re-bushing is not a problem. Myplans were to order the 6 lug rotors from GMC pauls but I didnt know if the would fit the 72 disc brake set ups that were given to me. I have some redone 73+control arms and front springs also so I can go to the wrecking yard to get some 73+ spindles.
so go 73+ instead of using the 1972 set up to use GMC pauls 6 lug rotors then right? light duty or heave duty?

I used control arms from an 87 chevy and the cool thing is I can go to any parts chain and get brake parts.

At this point you have to decide whether to use your '72 db setup or go with a '73-'87 db setup, but you can't mix and match. I take that back, you probably could but why??? I say sell the '72 db setup on the board. Like I said earlier, I prefer the '73-87 db setup, but also parts are probably easier to come by and cheaper.

A little confused.... but if you want 6 lug rotors, the 6 lug rotors you buy from our vendors for the 60-72 trucks fit 71/72 spindles. I have a 67 with a complete 71 suspension with ECE 6 lug rotors.

yeah I want to use the 6 lug disc brake set up but I didnt know if they fit the 71-72 spindles or the 73+ light duty spindles. I have both set ups (except for the 73+ spindles but thats an easy find) but I`d sure hate to do the job two times for these special order rotors
