i don't know much about doing that stuff either, i am having having "berry's Machine" down in Mason City, Iowa do it. Really nice guy and not bad for price. also, he is welling to teach

Not to go OT - but I was born in Mason City, and I did my very first engine overhaul ('68 327) with Berry's in 1978 This is the light brown brick building behind what used to be Fairway Foods, right?

What heads are those?Have you run /dynoed the engine yet?

The Heads are the orginal ones off the engine. There were no cracks so i am useing the same ones and they are good ones so ya. I have not Dynoed it yet... hopefully soon

whats the best way to begine when you first start it? like it idle or take it out right away but not harming .. YET?

If you put a new cam in it follow the manufactures recs.Usually run it at 1500 rpm for 15 minutes then shut it down and check everything.I usually change the oil after running it a couple of hours the again at 50 miles then regular schedule,but Im really picky about new motors.

see "Berry's" the guys that are re-building it told me to take it out right away and slow get it up to 5- 60 MPH and back it off to about 30 MPH. Is that better or letting it idle?

Hey guys....to help clear some stuff up for Chris the engine is a 3970010 block, unsure of heads although i would assume stock heads with that block. Block was completely gone through, magnafluxed line bored, honed etc.

Installed stock intake, new bull horn style exhaust manifolds, orig. crank., new pistons and i THINK rods, pistons are stock compression etc. Installed a crane .440/.440 "266" grind profile camshaft. New oil pump, water pump, fuel pump, harmonic balancer, dist, etc. etc. Still has the orig. carb on it but i think he would gain a lot by going to a performance aftermarket carb, BG, Edel., Holley etc. Theres a ton of other small stuff hes done to it that doesnt really effect performance in any manner.

This is straight from the machinist/engine builder that helped my build my engine. Basically do it like it was mentioned before. Fire it up(make sure you have primed the engine before you jump the gun) run it at high idle 1500-2000 RPM for 15-20 minutes then shut it down and check everything out. Once you have done this he said go find a big hill and go up and down it letting the engine compression brake you on the way down. Apparently this helps set the rings. Then break it in like you're gonna drive it. I've done probably 100 rebuilds on my motorcycle and this seems to be the best method, ride it like you stole it. I broke it in using the manufacturers specs once and first time at the track KABLOOYEEE, pop,pop,sputter, S!@#.
