Show and tell

Just showing off alittle. I finished this truck in 2003 and it has been basicaly just sitting in the garage since. I find more fun in building them than playing with them later. Since this one has been sitting I have built 3 others. A 72 Chevelle convertible, a 1993 GMC 6.5 diesel truck and a 1996 Chevy Crew cab dually 4x4 with a cummins diesel.
Anyway I am getting some enthusiasim back to work on the 70 Chevy again. It is all done and nothing really needs to be done to it, BUT I think I would like to put a Cummins 5.9 in this truck also. I installed 4 wheel disc brakes on it and made the emblem in the picture below. I thought it came out pretty cool. Thanks for looking.

Anyway, thanks mike It was actually alittile bit involved and time consuming.
What I did was find a piece of brass stock from a metal supplier that was close in width and thickness, but I had to buy the peice in a 10' long section (their minimum) I then cut them to length and had them sandblasted with a big industrial sandblaster to get the texture. The next step was taking them to an engraver to cut the font in the brass. The guys I used are out of bussiness, but maybe a trophy shop could do it?? Then I took them to my buddy to machine a taper on the backside to match the angle of the 4 wheel drive emblem. Next I took them to a chome shop. Once they were done I added some black paint in the letters and was done.
It was alot of running around to get it done.

Here is one of my 96 chevy crew cab 4x4 dually. It has a GMC grill cause I like them better. Installed a Cummins diesel in it, new trans (4L80E) and transfer case, new paint and lot lots more.
It was for sale and could be again

This is another dually I have. I have 8 vehicles, so before I could add a 67-72 dually I need to get rid of a couple first.

That picture was taken before I painted it. It is a beautiful truck. I have 2 other 96 crew cabs, but single rear wheel with 6.5 diesels. I converted them from the piece of **** ds4 electronic injection pumps to the DB2 4911 mechanical IP's.
It looks like the new picture I tried to post did not take. It was of my 2005 Super Duty. Crew cab dually 4x4

Wow, that does sound like a lot of work. Came out very sweet and thanks for the info on how you did it. I wonder how it would work if a mold was made from your original and then cast these. Hummm....

I think casting them would be even more work unless you were going to do thousands of them, but it would still be alot of time/work.

Here is a picture of the rear disc brake mock up. I did these before there were the really cool "kits" availibe. And 8 lug made it even harder.

Well I am a big 6.5 turbo fan. I know it is not even in the same class as a Cummins or Power stroke, but they do have thier place. I am actually working on my own web site right now that will cater mostly to the 6.5 td. I sell a bunch of the PMD extention cables for the 94&up trucks.
If you are going to pull serious loads alot the Cummins is the way to go, but in a Suburban I would go with the 6.5, it will just about fall into place in the engine compartment and be much less $$$
I am also going to sell a conversion guide that shows step by step how to swap out a DS4 (electronic) IP and put in a DB2 (mechanical) IP and keep your 4L80E transmission.

I'm a fan also. With a little effort the 6.2/6.5TD's are one of the most ecomonical V8 diesels out there. I am putting a turbo'd 6.2 out of a CUCV in my dually and i'm going to run it until the truck is completed. After I get the truck like I want it, I have a '99 6.5 TD that I am going to build for more power. Its going to get 18:1 Peninsular pistons, DSG gear drive and stud girdle and ARP main and head studs. 300-350 HP and 500 - 550 TQ is acheivable if they are built right. That seems to be about the point that they tend to get unreliable if you go any higher. That kind of output would do anything I ever wanted to do with my truck, especially with the NP435 tranny and Gear Vendors OD I planning on buying for it.

That is going to be a nice truck.
I have owned a 6.5 diesel since 1992 and have had 7 other 6.5 trucks. They are easy to work on and most autopart stores carry atleast some parts for them.
If you have a cummins the only place I can find parts (in my area) is at the Cummins dealer (= $$$) or online (= time) and one little autoparts store about 20 miles from me. Don't get me wrong I love the Cummins 5.9 and own 2 of them. One in my 96 Chevy and another on the floor of the shop waiting for a project.
