Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

Well I finally ran out of(just got tired of) the electrical bandaids....
All of the wires running to the back of the truck are toast dry rotted or just broke every 6 inches....
My care package just arrived at work with my new harness..
so we should have lights that stay on for more than a couple of pot holes now.....

Thats what I was thinking, but the drivers side rear harness has that wire with it..plus the connector is different..

No reverse lights in 63. but maybe it's there for the later model trucks, I didn't think about that.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

I think if you go to LMCtruck.com website you can see a picture of the complete reverse light assembly including the plug, that might help figure it out.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

I believe reverse lights were an option through out production of these trucks, became madatory/standard in '66

did you chase that wire into the cab?
are you sure it is a ground?

Thanks Joe.....I learn something here everyday.

There was no plug for it on the fire wall...
it's the same length as the other.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

Check for continuity. If it is for the license plate then it should come off the brown wire. And like you said if it is the reverse light it would be a separate light green wire.

It's a totally different wire and connector. I think like some said it goes to the reverse lights. thanks

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

My tailite sockets looked like that too. I also had the springs stick down so as not to make contact when plugging in the bulb. Looking good with that fresh wire.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build

The green wire is definitely the reverse wire. There is a separate wire harness for the reverse lights from that connector which installs in the holes in the frame beside the taillight harness. There are ground straps all over these trucks including one mounted from the frame to the rear cross member. Factory reverse trucks, the green wire was moulded with the tailight harness. Dealer installed reverse lights, you had to drill a hole above the tailight harness as it comes out of the firewall beside the gas pedal. A new separate green wire was routed alongside the tailight harness. There's a separate harness on the inside of the cab depending if you were running a 3 speed or powerglide or 4 speed. I believe the switch is the same for a 3 speed manual or powerglide that mounts near the base of the steering columb. It's the same switch they used in the passenger cars. The four speed switch has a finger that has a setscrew that tightens it to the shifter and you have to remove the cup that holds down the shifter ball and replace it with a new cup which holds the 4 speed switch which is different from the 3 speed and powerglide switch.
