clutch swing arm problems!!
ok so here is the problem i dont know exactly what it is called so im doing my best
the swing arm in the engine compartment that is mounted in between the engine block and the chassis.the bolt that holds that swing arm to the engine block broke on me and i want to know the easiest way to get the threads out of the engine block. this is a daily driver so the quicker i can get advise the better thanks |

If you have the space to get a drill in there, use a good easy out set. (I think the box is labeled E-Z out) The good sets I've seen and used come with the drill bits needed. If you can use the biggest easy out possible. The drill bits are left handed (reverse) and with any luck just drilling the hole will get the bolt out. Just go slow and try to get the bit as close to center as possible.

I'm not sure...haven't looked at that part of the engine in a long time...my 85 Suburban has been getting most of my time right now. I have a 67 Suburban with a manual tranny. I'll look at it tomorrow and let you know.

You might try to turn it out by tapping the outer edge of it around.Use a small punch or chsel and go easy.

Dropping the inner fender will give you some space.Make sure you get it centered and take your time.If you cant get a straight shot you might have to take loose the motormount and jack up the engine

I went out and looked at my burb, and it looks like you will have to lift the engine a bit to get a straight shot with a drill.
You might get lucky doing what PanelDeland suggested...that method has worked for me in the past in other similar situations.

i woudl recommend, because of clearance, that you take a nut 9maybe 3/4"??) and plug weld it to the remnants. Shouldn't take too much and would let you get a wrench on easy to turn it out. I've used this trick to permantly make late model trans plugs easier to get out.

67 mater has a great idea! I would bet that it broke from loose play/wear on the bushings that are in the clutch cross shaft. Like someone else said, If I were to have this problem, I would have a clear head, and a very sharp center punch and small hammer. Look closely at the remains, try and gently tap the broken stud on the edge like you were trying to unscrew it. My guess is that with a bit of luck it will unscrew. good luck

I use lugnuts, as they are tapered to fit down into the hole. I pulled a broken harmonic balancer bolt this way, took a few lugnuts to get a weld on it enough to back it out, but it worked excellent! Good luck.
