HEI MSD Distributors
I was looking for some help on which MSD distributor would be best for my truck. I have a 69 Chevy with a 350. I intend to up grade as I go with some bolt on performance parts but thats about it. Right now it is stock with the exception of an Edelbrock 600cfm carb.
When I called MSD for advice they asked how many pins on the current distributor? Am I correct that the pins are electrical connections? The MSD Pro-Billet PN 8365 the one I was looking at. Thanks John |

Also, I was wonder do I need to replace the coil and ignition module with a new HEI distributor?

I have the exact same setup as you do except my truck is a 70. I didnt put a MSD HEI in but I did put a Proform HEI in and I love it. It has been working great.

go with the msd ready to run billet dizzy with a 8200 blaster 2 coil...this is a small cap distributor with a remote coil....It works GREAT..Ive had proforms and GM HEIs and a pertronix flame thrower...the MSD is hands down better.

Yea, if you are going to buy an MSD distributor, get the small cap ready to run. If you want big cap HEI, get the Proform. It is about $160 vs. nearly $400 for the MSD. Ouch. The ready-to-run small cap will set you back $250, but well worth it if you have a 4x4, 2 wheel drives are fine with the big cap. I have the small cap in my Jimmy and put the Proform in my truck. As with any iteration of GM HEI, keep a spare module in the glove box. About $20 at any parts store.
