Power steering squeal

When ever I turn the wheels all the way to the locks on either side, I get a loud squealing sound. Doesn't sound like the belt is slipping. What can I do to stop this ? Sometimes I forget to turn the wheel slower as I get closer to the locks, and it's kind of embarrassing to have your vehicle making odd noises.

mine does the same thing. wd-40 cured that problem.

I had the same problem.. put a new belt on, still did it.. found out that both belts, old and new, were sitting too low in the pulleys.. and that was causing the squeal. Check it out.

I've done more searching and about the best thing and I found several things. I have a brand new belt and brand new Alan Grove brackets which are extremely sturdy, more so than stock brackets.

One was that "the air was not fully bleed out of the pump and that could cause it to squeal when turned against the locks."

Another was that "these older pumps don't have high pressure relief valves. Newer pumps do because people insisted on turning the steering wheel hard against locks which tends to burn up the older style pumps."

What is the correct answer ? I still know. I'm going to read through my 77 GMC manual and see if it contains any info on this.

I'm just really surprised there is not more info about this. Everyone acknowledges that there is in fact a squeal when turning against the locks. Every power steering pump I've had of this design does it, BUT, I still do not know if these trucks did this right off the show room floor, or if there is a solution to the problem.
