Hoping someone can help me out here. I just finished converting my 66 c-10, to power steering. I am using a 1984 gearbox, and a 1990 rebuilt pump. Problem is that the steering seems a little sticky. It turns very smooth and easy, with very little play if any. It does return somewhat after a turn, but on straight driving it is pretty sticky, as I can turn the steering wheel and it will stay pretty much where I put it. It is sorta a bother when traveling because when you try to compensate for a little drift, I sort of end up Sig sagging down the road. It was not doing that before the swap. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Did you set your caster for the power steering?

I had the front end aligned after I did the conversion. I can only assume or hope they did that right.

It almost sounds like you still have air in the system

OK, maybe there is something wrong with the gearbox. With the truck jacked up and engine off, the steering is very hard in the netrual position, but about one turn of the wheel either direction and it gets easy. Couyld there be something not working properly in the gearbox?

its only natural that the gear box have wear in the centered position... Thats where the wheel is at most of the time.. Its prolly just a worn box.. And also... alot of alignment shops go by the phrase "Set the toe, and let it go" Very posible that you still have the caster settings for a manual steering truck.. Its diff between power and non power.

Thanks for the replys. I just bought a rebuilt gearbox. I will let ya know if that solves it.

It was the gearbox. It doesn't allway's pay to try and save a buck

. Although in this case I still came out all right since the core charge would have been $85.00 and I paid $65.00 for the used gearbox

So you bought a remand gear box through a local parts store? Glad to hear it took care of your problem. Sure makes a nicer rig with power.

Now I have a new problem! I just want to drive it all the time, and with the cost of gas

Saaaay, you've got a sweet setup there. zz/ od and all already. You're gonna love driving it now for sure. Gas is always going to be high so get used to it. Drive that truck!

I know you bought a new one already, but it sounds almost like your high point on the gearbox was just a bit too tight

I am having the exact same problem with my newly installed power steering. Before shelling out the cash for a remaned gearbox I was wondering if there were any other ideas out there as far as what I could do to troubleshoot. Such as how do I adjust the high point on my box?
