axle splines

does anyone know how many splines are on the axles of 8.5 10 bolt rear axle for an 85 gmc 2wd 1/2 ton? ive seen 28 and 30 splines. is there a way to find out without pulling the axle and counting? also are the 8.5 axles the same width from 73-87 to 88-98 and what splimes are they? thanks for the help JOE

Re: axle splines

My 85 C-10 1/2 ton had 28 spline. Once I blew it up I put 33 spline Moser parts in. Thats all I have to say about that.

Re: axle splines

If your axles are still stock, they're 28 spline. They changed over to 30 spline in the 10 bolts sometime in the late 80's, not sure exactly what year.

Re: axle splines

Splines for the 8.5" rear changed from 28 to 30 in '88 or '89 depending on the vehicle model. And from the research I did a while back, the 30 spline axle shafts for the '88-'98 truck are a little longer (like 1/2") than the 28 spline shafts on earlier years.

I did not find an off-the-shelf direct fit axle shaft to convert from 28 to 30 spline carrier. Would have to have some custom made. Not a big deal, but maybe $100 or so more than direct fits would cost.
