My oil smells like gas

Ok my dipstick smells like I dunked it in the fuel tank. I know that I need to change my oil, but if it smells like gasoline, is there an underlying problem that I don't know about? The oil is about a quart low right now, but I have all the stuff to change it this weekend. I think that I'm running rich also.

Re: My oil smells like gas

I had this problem long time ago. If your running a mechanical fuel pump, the diaphram in the pump tears and allows fuel to enter the crank case.

Hope it helps. Remember no sparks.

ALSO if you have cranked it over for an extended
period of time trying to get it to start or something
this can happen.

Re: My oil smells like gas

I am leaning towards bad fuel pump. I would fix it before changing the oil or it will just happen again.

Re: My oil smells like gas

sounds like a fuel pump to me. Sometimes too if alot of gas gets into the cylinders from cranking with no spark it can seep past the rings and get into the oil. But this is far less likely.
