3:42 Gears and a 700r4

My 84 has a 700r4 with either 2:73 or even worse 2:41, I can pickup a set of 3:42's cheap, are they worth it?

What size tires?

I'd say a bigger jump is required, if you have anything more than a 33" tire. What's the intended use of the truck?

I like 3.73's, 33" and a 700R4... even then, you may be lugging the motor a bit.

With a 33'' tall tire, you could go as deep as a 4.56 ratio. In overdrive the 4.56 will become a 3.28

The 700R4/3.42 combo came std for many years in the late 80's
and early 90's Corvettes. So yeh it makes for a good combo

(That is my current set-up on the C5 build that I am working on)

Yep, with a smaller than 33" tire.

I would go 3.73 or 4.10

Yo`ll be good in Florida,I`d think.I like this combo in a 2wd with shorter tires.I consider 3.42s to be the tallest gear I`d want with o/d.I feel from 3.08s and on are as good as o/d.

Re: 3:42 Gears and a 700r4

Well I'm from the 2WD camp and I'd consider 3.42's and a 28" tall tire a good combo for a 700R4. That's with 28" tall tires though.

With 33's I would run at least 4.10's.

Re: 3:42 Gears and a 700r4

Why not 3.73s?I had a`90 Blazer with 3.08s and 12.50/33s.It was a manual 4spd and was a borderline high.Granny seemed almost high enough to use and sometimes I did.Not nearly as short as any other truck I`ve had.It rolled down the hiway like I had o/d.I wouldn`t want o/d with that combo and don`t see a need.I believe you`d be in & out alot.An automatic would be worse.
I never played off road with that rig.It was the family car.
