how hard is it to remove the cab?

the cab off my 87 c10? it has no bed on it and i am redoing the frame and though it would be easyer without a cab and i have to pull the motor and that would be easyer to... do i have to take the front fenders off and stuff? or just unplug everything on firewall and unbolt cab mounts? thanks

remove the fenders, remove the trans linkage , carb linkage ,heater hoses, wiring harness ,a/c lines if any,cab mounts, ground strap, and parking brake and the cab should be able to be lifted off

The cab is heavy and lopsided (like a TV set). Strip it down as much as you can. Removing the doors will help a lot!

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

I took the doors off and the bench seat just to make it a lil lighter. Ran a 2x6 with a strap and presto!! off. Its not really that hard, it just sounds hard. Good luck with ur project.

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

I just lifted my cab up 2' by myself using rachet straps around the windshield post, that was a great center of balance, but I guess this would be easiest with the windshield out. good luck, it really is not that bad, my dad, a frined and I stripped the truck to the frame in just over a weekend

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

Pull the engine and trans together if you are planning on taking the trans out. The cab is easier to lift off with that stuff out of the way.

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

I blocked mine up about 6" so I could get under it to wire wheel and paint under it easily. I did not see the need to completely remove it from the frame to do what I needed.

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

If you have to do it by yourself it's not fun but do-able. I built a set of tall sawhorses and put one on each side of the cab. Then I took 2 8' landscape timbers and put one in front of the cab and one behind (box was already off). You should be able to lift the back of the cab yourself and slide the timber under the cab and on top of the sawhorse. This can be tricky but is possible. For the front, you can use a 2x4 vertically placed on a jack and lift the cab using the firewall's front pinchweld carefully. Then slide the timber onto the sawhorses. Make sure the sawhorses are tall enough to place the cab higher than the highest section of frame. Make sure they are placed wide enough to clear the rear tires. Now you can roll the chassis out from underneath. My sawhorses where a little short. I had to let the air out of the rear tires to get the chassis out.

Re: how hard is it to remove the cab?

that seems like a good idea anyways so you can work on the under the cab like clean it up and paint it
