Re: original steering wheel

Guess I'm going to be attempting this in the near future. Just bought another steering wheel off of here. Don, sure wish you lived closer so you could help! Also did you used a paste to protect the plastic while welding? Soooo many questions, but can't wait to do this mod!

Re: original steering wheel

Yes, I used the blue heat absorbing paste, it comes in a tube and applied it liberally. It worked well, no melted plastic/rubber issues. The main issues I encountered 1) I cut the spokes too short initially and had to weld pieces back to the spokes.
(2)make the cut in the rim at the bottom spoke, it makes it easier to maintain perfect circle by giving some extra support to rim cut when welded (I cut the first one I did at the top)
Take it slow and clamp it well and you will have no problem keeping it centered. I will be happy to answer any questions.

Re: original steering wheel

If I can swing the price, I'll put one in my 68 even if it's the wrong year. My son and I are on the large side and would love to have a smaller wheel. I don't need the big wheel w/PS.

I like the smaller steering wheel......now I am thinking the gear shift lever needs to be reduced accordingly

Re: original steering wheel

IŽd take one for a 68! Converting mine to power steering so the smaller wheel would be great!
