New Carb, Need Help
So I just picked up this new Holley off craigslist, it has never been installed and came with all the little parts and pieces. It will replace my old beat Edelbrock, so hopefully it will solve my acceleration/flooding troubles. I don't know anything about Holley's so what all do I need to do to make this work where the old edelbrock was? Where does the fuel inlet hose go? Where/how do I hook up the linkage? And maybe someone could clarify what it is for me, I was told it is a 600 CFM, but it doesnt look like a double pumper, but I have no idea what I am looking at. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Re: New Carb, Need Help
im no carb expert,. But it looks like a single feed, vacuum secandary , 600 cfm. only has 1 accelerater pump so no its not a double pumper. fuel line hooks up in the front left corner. throtle linkage looks like it hooks up like the edelbrok.

Re: New Carb, Need Help
Thanks for the reply. How do you tell if it is vacuum secondary? I have been browsing through Jegs and have found a nice fuel inlet line, manual choke cable, and some various pieces that should help me hook it all up.

In your 3rd pic down, the round thingy in the back left corner is the vacuum pulloff thingy. You'll run an 1/8" hose to that.
Got any plans for your Edelbrock? I might be interested in it.

Re: New Carb, Need Help
So there a vacuum port somewhere on the round thingy? I was gonna throw the old Eddy on craigslist, but you have first dibs.

Re: New Carb, Need Help
I'm pretty sure that's a 600 cfm carb. It's also a 4160 single feed for future reference. I've attached some of your pics for helpful tidbits to get you started.
1st pic: The circled part is the vacuum secondary diaphram. No vacuum line is needed. It works off internal vacuum from a check ball valve inside the carb. This diaphram is tuneable by using vacuum secondary springs, which vary in stiffness to open the secondaries early or late. Stiffer springs open them late, lighter springs open them early. I wouldn't mess with the springs at first. That's something you can work out later in more refined tuning methods. 2nd pic: The circled area is your fuel inlet. The stock fitting is a 5/8"-18 inverted flare fitting which accepts any 3/8" fuel/brake line fitting. My suggestion would be to get a Banjo fitting from Jeg's, Summit or a performance parts store. It will be a barbed fitting for a rubber fuel line which make installation easier. You can get fancy later if you want. 3rd pic: Jetting is important. The bolts circled are your fuel bowl bolts. You can can change jets by removing these four bolts, removing the fuel bowl and metering block. The jets are in the metering block. You measure jet changes by checking plugs after some drive time. If the plugs are dark and sooty, smaller jets. If they're whits to very light brown, bigger jets. Before you do anything else, buy some literature! There are dozens of books to choose from on how to work on Holley carbs. They are very useful with lots of good info. Don't just buy one book either. Buy several. Scan through them at the stores if you can and see which ones give you info you can understand and have lots of pics.

Re: New Carb, Need Help
So I hooked everything up and fired the motor, started, stumbled, caught fire and died. Twice. What does this mean?
EDIT: Starts, idles decently, when I give it a lil gas it stalls and dies, and sprays a fine mist of gas everywhere. No fires this time. What do I need to adjust? Last edited by LuckyHenriksen; 11-26-2008 at 11:11 PM. |

Sounds like the timing is slow.

Re: New Carb, Need Help
Vacuum ports plugged/advance hooked up. The timing was good with my old carb, would it need to be changed for this one?

Re: New Carb, Need Help
I didn't think so. Does it mean its getting too much fuel when I push the accelerator and it coughs and dies?
