Re: My heater isnt working very well..

pull the heater hose's off and flush the heater core with water bottom first then the top till you get a clear stream of water. then reinstall the hoses. you may want to check your "T" stat (should have a 195f) and a good rad cap 15-16lbs and a good rad level. you could also make sure that the heater door is ajusted as to not let cold air in.

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

Could be the fan too. I had to replace the brushes on the motor on mine. A little light oil on the bearings every 40 years or so works wonders too.

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

I replaced my heater core last year and in the process cleaned out the ductwork. There was 40 years worth of leaves and what looked like a mutant rat nest...anyway heats great now and blows super...I'd start there.

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

Like kns said. Check the simple things first. Check for enough water in the radiator. Check the heater hoses with the truck warmed up to see how warm they are. They should be too hot to touch.

When I first got my truck it did the same thing as yours. Barely warm air. Turns out someone had took the thermostat out and never put a new back in.

The cooling system worked great. So good in fact that the engine ran very cold. Could barely defog the window.

To find the thermostat just follow the top radiator hose over to the engine. Where it connects to the engine is the thermostat housing. Take off the thermostat housing and the thermostat will be sitting right in there. Some water will drain out when you take it apart, and you need a new gasket to put it back together. Just make sure you have a new gasket when you go to put it back together.

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

A new fan motor is about $20 at AutoZone. P102 is the part no. I used.

If you change the fan motor, get a vacuum cleaner and some kind of smallish hose (about 1-1/2") and push into the housing and suck out the trash. This should help a lot. I pulled a big pile of trash out of mine.

This is the heater/blower box. The hoses come in from the motor & out to the radiator or back to the motor if your radiator has been changed.

If I remember correctly, there's one bolt on passenger side bottom that's he// to get out. Anyone figured out how to get it out without having to remove the wheel well?

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

I changed my heatercore & the hose bung on the old one was plugged solid with what looked like minerals (calcium?) It's as hot as an oven in my truck now. It is time/money well spend changing the heatercore & cleaning out the mung in the box. Dont forget to seal up where the bungs exit the heaterbox. There were foam seals there at one time, but they have usually turned to dust long ago. I havnt found an easy way to get that bottom bolt out. Mabe hire Vern Troyer for an hour?

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

Then you might want to pull your fan out and clean it out and to also check to make sure the motor isn't partialy seized. Pull the fan out and vacuum out the duct work what you can anyways.

Re: My heater isnt working very well..

If you do any thing with your cooling system just make sure you top it up with antifreeze or you'll crack your block.

WD-40 the switch at the fan control (behind face ) it often gets bound and won't kick to high. Again; simple first.
