sand blasting wont work till you get all the grees off, it will stick to it and not realy do anything. I used a gallon bucket with simple green ( because im a simple guy) and a wooden bristle brush i bought in the cleaning isle af a grociery store. it takes some time but gets it done. if you have a presure washer that would work even better. what little I remember from when I was in school we had a nice one on auto shop.

wire wheels on an angle grinder work great, you have to get the good strong ones though, about 15-20 bucks..here is a before and after pic of a frame i did with a wire wheel then spray bomb, turned out good for about 30 bucks worth of materials

Beg, borrow or steal a steam cleaner for a weekend. Maybe you have a rental place nearby? If not a steam cleaner maybe a pressure washer would do. Be sure to dress for the occasion.

Like so many, I've been there and done that. It takes a combination of all the above. There is no simple solution. I do think that a steam cleaner would work the best though. I have a 2300PSI pressure washer, and it works well when combined with the oven cleaner/simple green/castol or whatever, but not just by itself.

Take your time, you will like the job better than if you hurry.

Do you have an air compressor? If so you can pick up a siphon type blow gun at NAPA and a can of fresh solvent. This will also come in handy for the rest of your project. Un-believeably handy tool during engine assembly.

man, get yerself some stuff called brakleen. its expensive, like 5 bucks a bottle, but get a case, spray it on, lieave it like 2 mins, then blast it with a pressure washer. if that doesnt work, then get yerslef a bottle of varsol or paint thinner, and dump it on. then work it in with a wire brush, nad let it sit. then blast it again. i work in a heavy equipment shop, and i have learned the easeiest way to clean oil and road crap off. if the above dont work, well, sucks 2 be u man,. hope i helped dude

What! Disturb the anticorrosion system! I'm sure that is supposed to be there--it is on all my chevy's.

In all seriousness, if you use the wire wheels, wear a full face shield, long sleeves, and gloves or you will be picking wires out of your skin. Wire wheels are very useful, but hazardous. I would be careful too of some of the more virulent cleaners. I have a well at my house, and I don't want nasties soaking down into the soil.

Soap, pressure, and heat work best for me.

Just paint over it like most tranny shop do. If people ask tell them the texture is spray on bed liner for durability!
