1962 Fuel Cell dimensions

I have gone through most of the threads, and can't find the width between the frame rails and cross members... I keep forgetting to measure it (even made notes to myself and lost them..lol) and when I get to work and want to order a cell... Why this has eluded me...lol

ugh... anyways.. if anyone has the dimensions handy...

I am not sure that I want a custom tank. May try to see what else is out there.. i.e. fuel cell .. albeit at less gallons.

I didn't want to take his time, if its just an option. But if he wanted to chime in on his own accord, it would be appreciated.

Alrighty... So I finally did it myself... guess posting here helped me remember to do it..lol

anyways... I got this:

closest point 36 3/16 width between frame rails (closest point nearest the rear axle) it does get a little bit wider towards rear of truck to about 7/16.

length front to back... closest point is 15.5 between cross members. It does get as wide as 17 inches... because of the angle of the cross member that the sway bar attaches to.

depth... prob around 8 inches I figure. I saw a drawing showing 9in in front (nearest axle) and 7.5 inches in rear. I am guessing that allows a bit more clearance in back and makes for a better pickup point for the fuel.

The flanges need to be at 3.5 inches on the short sides to allow the tank to mount to the bottom of the frame rails and clear the bed support.

SO ... I guess 36 x 15.5 x 8 (or 9 slope to 7.5 in rear) without creating any odd shapes. approximately 19.3 gallons from outside dimensions .. probably around 19 gal when all said and done.

So are you looking for someone to build one to your specs or are you just trying to figure out what size of fuel cell to buy from Summit?

I was looking to see what might work from summit. Plus it seems as if the 60-62 tank dimensions are a secret and not a normally built item...lol.. can find 63 and up tanks all day prebuilt...

Oh thats weird I dont know why there arent any for the early years. I have noticed there isnt as much aftermarket suspension stuff for 60-62

The suspension on mine was fairly easy....lol.. ford nine inch rear end... and dropped it 2.5 in front and 5 in rear with springs that I bought online...

oh and put the disks on all four wheels...

Finding that stuff was a lot easier than the fuel tank. I did find a guy that builds custom tanks... .125 alum... so good stuff... for a good price... I will report back in about 30 days if I decide on the tank...

final dimensions will be something like 36 x (14 on top sloped to 16 on bottom) x (9 front sloped to 7.5 rear) for clearance and to be sure. about 19 gals. should be 18 usable.

Like $250.00 for a 20gallon. JEGS Aluminum Fuel Cells are about the same. Maybe a little cheaper than Summit.

Looks like you removed the rear cross brace and moved it back?

That makes things easier for sure. I would only be concerned that no crush zone exizts if someone rearends your truck. Maybe that's not true with the fuels cells? or even a concern? did you just move it back or did you craft a new one?

I decided to move the brace back and go with a tank a little bigger. 36 x 16 x (9 - 7.5). It is about 20.5 gals. outside dimensions. We'll see.

That will let me move the filler neck back closer to the rear of the bed.

I have my fuel cell in the back, but its in the cargo area above the frame....Ive had people mention getting rear-ended but I figure I cant control that and its gotta be better than in the cab............

Hey Bud,
I am in Saint Marys, GA for the Holidays. I will be back on the second of Jan, and I will take detailed pics of my fuel cell setup. I need to get my build tread started. Me and pops are going to get all the pics and info together soon. We did all that for his 69 AMC Rambler American. The frame has been altered a bit to Accommodate for a lot of things; including the fuel cell.

Yea, there is another brace underneath the fuel cell. She is pushed up a little too. I will take some more detailed pics and post them on Jan. 2nd or the third. I have to clean her up good and shoot some pics.
