Well, I gave it a go,,,

Painted the hood today, Sanded it down and my first attempt at shooting paint.
Got the D/A going
[IMG][/IMG]
The compressor at the office couldnt keep up, So I had to go at it "cave man" style
[IMG][/IMG]
Papered and loaded
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
My first time, Will sand it back down and re-shoot.
Was MOST fun, After I got done I was looking for anything to paint. Wished I did a more prep for primer so I could paint more.
Any and ALL C/C are welcome,

I think you need to use more paper/ plastic to cover the rest of your truck. You might think the overspray wont fly that far until you take off the paper you laid down and find a line of overspay where the paper stopped.

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

That orange peel effect that you see on the nose of the hood can be controlled by changing your paint nozzle and slow down on the application less paint per pass, so to speak. With practice, you can lay it on pretty close to smooth.

Good thing to start on and practice. The big flat surface will give you time to play and grow in this area. Many would not even try, go for it.

I agree, cover everything that you do NOT want overspray on. It is bad enough that the vapors still get into every crack and crevice, but overspray isa finish killer to your day.

Stay away from the newspaper if you can. It bleeds through to easily. If nothing else, go to Harbor freight and get their rolls of masking paper.

Looks great to me. For what it is worth, I got orange peel in the exact same place when I painted my hood.

So, move slower with each pass,, It was the first time using a paint gun like that. Still need to learn it.

Yes its epoxy primer. I figured that if it was such a huge screw up, I have plenty of sand paper for a re-do

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

Move slower and turn the flow down to a finer mist, takes some practice to get everything right. If its too cold things wont flow well, and you will get even more orange peel.

Not terrible for the first time. Just flatten out the primer with some 200, and keep going. Try not to go through the coat you have applied already.

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

Still learning the adjustments of the gun.

Think this weekend I might either re-do the hood, or maybe the bed sides?

Whats the best and easiest way to clean the gun after using epoxy primer?

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

What is the temperature in the shop? Most paints work poorly below 65 degrees and as stated above.

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

On Sunday the temp was real close to that. It was chilly. But, I can always scruff the hood and re-shoot it.? This weekend Im looking around 75 deg. here. So I might get it done. Need the practice anyways,

Re: Well, I gave it a go,,,

I am not a professional painter, but here is a technique i use: watch the wetness of the hood as you spray. Hold your head at the right angle as to see the reflection in the primer. Look at it at an angle that you can see a reflection of a light or something. "Pull" that wetness across the hood. That will eliminate the streaks. Looks like you need to turn down the paint and air flow, try more settings.

While cooler weather isn't ideal, I just shot a minivan bumper cover in 50-60 degree weather. I had to turn down the pain to detail gun speeds, but it still came out with only trace of orange peel.

I like the doing one panel at a time thing. For me at least, after painting for awhile, it can be easy to get sloppy and make mistakes. Especially when your arm is starting to ache and just mentally tired.
