Original color of 205

What is the original color of a 205 transfer case. It kinda looks like a orangish brown. Has anyone tryed Rust-oleum "equipment orange"?? I want to do a quickie brush job.

Mine also had a redish orange color to it but I powdercoated mine. I don't know what the original color was though.

I am almost positive they are supposed to be orange. All of the ones I have seen were orange.

When I was painting mine, I was told it was a dark mopar engine red (Not HEMI). Something about Chevy buying a bunch of the np205s from a plant that made them for Chrysler. Wheather its true or not I dont know. But I bought a spray can from my local Chrysler dealer and it seemed to match the original shade perfectly.

i've had good luck with it, and yes it can be bought in either spray cans or pints/quarts/gallons. it takes some time to cure but once it dries it's tough to beat.

oldchev4x4 I asked him the same question about the cross member last night and he said that the skid plate was the only thing that mounted to it.

The 205s were painted a Chrysler (Mopar) red-orange color. It is much more red than Chevy orange. New Process Gear was 100% owned by Chrysler Corporation when these t-cases were made. It was later owned 50 - 50 by GM and Chrysler, but I think GM has once again sold their share. They are starting to go to Borg-Warner t-cases in some of the new trucks now.

Pic of mine after the black powdercoat. Wish I would have known what the original color was so I could have had it in the correct color.

Dodge 205s are very similar, but they used different spline counts on the inputs, different adapters, and the shifters would most likely be different also. There are dozens of versions of the 205 that were produced over the years with different input and output spline counts, different output yokes / flanges, different adapters and mounting provisions, and left and right hand drop versions.

Randy,
i checked my local hardware store and got the following numbers-
quart- 7769
gallon- 7669 or K7769
the store owner said these numbers are for california as we have stricter laws governing paint. but, your local hardware store should be able to contact their rustoleum distributor and get the correct color by using the above numbers.
