Need Vent Window Help(pics inside)
ok the vent windows are on some doors i bought. on the drivers door i can make out an eight on the sticker and what looks like a 3 but i can't tell for sure. but what years vent window does it look like i know they changed it some time. it looks like the ones on my 84 to me. but how does it come apart? i know i can take the nut and spring off the bottome but the top hinge is riveted. is the rubber in one piece? and how does it come out if i wanted to replace it?

To get the vent window out you, have to cut or otherwise remove the rivet that serves as the upper pivot point. If you're in need of the rivet and the tool to set it, I have one I've never used that you're welcome to. Or you can buy the setup from LMC (they do not list them in the catalog, but if you call them they do have it). And yes the gasket is one piece. I think I have a new set of those kicking around here somewhere also. I just ended up buying brand new assemblies from GM. Ken

The early and late ones (I don't know when they switched) are almost the same. I have an early one in my '86 pickup, but it is held in place by one less screw than the original. The early ones don't have a mounting point near the top hinge.
I found out the hard way when I bought the wrong one for my truck. It fits, but is not mounted as securely. I have not changed out the rubber, but I was told that the rivet has to be removed from the upper hinge to replace it. I need to replace mine, so I am interested in reading what others have to say. Slonaker Edit: chauffeur types faster than I do... |

hey thanks for the replies guys.
Chauffeur: if you want to get rid of that stuff let me know what it would take to take that stuff of your hands. do you have the rivet stuff for both sides? the rubber in them now is in ok shape, i thought about leaving it in there, but i bought all new rubber and window channels for the rest of the doors and i can't see in doing it halfway and now would be a good time to replace it i guess while i got it apart. and when looking for replacement vent window rubber i noticed there are two piece kits and one piece kits. is there some difference in the vent windows that require one piece or two piece replacement seals? |

A few weeks ago I replaced the rubbers and the rivets(thanks to Gerardo).
You have to drill out the rivet from the top hinge, and remove the nut, spring and little rings from the lower hinge.Put away these parts in the order they came off, otherwise you may get confused later. It's a hell of a job to put the new rubber in.I spent a few hours fighting with it,and used 2 cans of WD40. My original rubber was 2 piece (1984),but I got a 1 piece rubber from the shop. There is a differance between the two.The 1 piece rubber doesn't have the steel reinforcement with the little hooks,so I had to glue this part to the frame. You better check this before you order. Good luck with the work, and if you encounter any difficulties just drop me an email, maybe I can help you out. ![]()

If you give me a couple of days to dig this stuff out, I'll get back to you and let you know exactly whats here. And if you will reimburse me the shipping charges, I'd be more than happy to give you the stuff. At least someone will get some use out of it. BTW, I believe I only have 1 rivet. I'll dig this out tomorrow. Ken |

chauffeur- hey that would be great, just let me know me when you get things rounded up.
midnightblues-i'm thinking now maybe mine are two piece cause it appears to have the the hooks you are talking about but if a one peice seal will work i'll prob go that route and glue it in. i haven't attempted to take them apart yet. I wanted to get some input first to make sure sure i didn't tear anything up. |

The 81-84 is the 2 piece design, the 85-91 is the 1 piece design.
