door hing question

Were can i buy door pin bushings for a 1970 gmc. my doors you can pick up on the back and wiggle. i call autozone and orielly and they only go back to 73 for them. I remember seeing a faq on here of how to rebuild them. anyone know that link?

I am sure you can find what you need.

You can still buy the bronze bushings at the dealer. I just bought 8 of them last week. And as stated above, they are also in the help section of auto parts stores. They also have the pin kits there.

The pin kits in the help section are labelled GM only no specifics, the kit has 4 bushings and 1 pin (which will have to be cut to fit or old one reused) actual process of rebuilding takes about 10 minutes,getting old pin out may take quite a bit longer. I have had good luck soaking in Gibbs oil for 2 days and then using a 2lb hammer, punch and a strong vise. Good luck.

Alright guys i have been to every parts store we have around here and cant find anything, does anyone have a part number and store were bought? Anyone take pics of the process while doing it, because i have soaked it with wd40 every 20 min for like 4 hours and then try to hamer out the pin from the bottom and it wond budge..... any suggestions, again pics and part numbers would be very helpful.

I had to heat mine with a propane torch to get mine out. Still had to hit them good though.If you only need one door repaired I will send you what I have left from my kit. pm me your address.

WD40 is only good for oiling up a bicycle chain. Get some type of rust buster. Some of these pins have to take some hard wacks with a BFH before coming loose. As stated above, you may need to heat it.

If you whack it too much, you will just mushroom the bottom of the pin and you will never get it out.

If you want to try that method, soak them in PB blaster or liquid wrench for a few days. Then use a strong vise to hold them in place, with an old socket under the button head of the pin for more support/stability. Get a hand held sledge hammer, and whack it one time, as hard as you can. That should drive it flush with the bottom of the hinge and bust it loose. You can use a punch as Harold stated to get it the rest of the way out.

In some cases, the hinge pin has become one with the hinge, and no matter how much or hard you hit it...it will never come out. In this instance, use a dremel tool with a small cutting wheel, or a 3" cutoff air tool ($6 at harbor freight) and cut the pin in between the hinges carefully. Then use a punch to remove the pieces.

I have restored several sets of hinges, using both of the above methods. Good luck.
