what to look for

im planning on buying a 81-87 4x4 some time soon and wondering what problems i need to look for. im not really worried about the condition of the body to some extent cause il use it as a bush buggy/winter driver. plans are basicly a 4 inch lift, 33-35" tires. im definatly gonna stay away from the diesels unless i find a real cheap one to swap in a gas. also did the blazers/jimmys of this era come with the removable roof or was it completly fixed? thanx

Re: what to look for

The only problem is the frame cracking around the steering box. Not a big deal since repair plates are only a hundred bucks.

Re: what to look for

what kind of transfer cases did they use during this period, did the k10s have the same as the k20s? reason why im asking is cause a buddy of mine has a 84 gmc k20 and the transfer case blew up on him.

Re: what to look for

The 81-87 trucks used a NP 208 aluminum transfer case. They are a chain driven unit. The big thing to watch on these is to make sure that you use Dexron 3 automatic transmission fluid in them, not 90 weight gear lube. People tend to make the mistake of putting gear lube in them and that is usually what ends up causing them to fail. I believe the later model Blazers from 89 up to 91 used a NP 241 aluminum transfer case. The same rules apply. Don't used gear lube in them! I have owned them, and currently have one in my 1986 K10. No problems to report. Good luck finding a truck. ...Joe
