Door vin plates
I noticed the other day the the vin tags on my truck and my donor truck are different. One is a single plate. The other is two plates. They are both 68's as far as I know. I haven't actually run the vin #'s to make sure. What's up with that? Anyone know?

Re: Door vin plates
My 68 cab had 2. I've changed cabs to a 72. Now I gotta figure out exactly where to put my 68 plate, because of the relief vent.

Re: Door vin plates
ONly if an officer of the law ever wants to look... or if you go to sell it... or if you take it to a proper inspection station.
Without the VIN, you can't prove it's ID, without being able to prove the truck's ID, it is then considered stollen, and then taken from you. |

Those "new rivets" are rosette rivits at 50.00 for a set of 4! When you can find them.

Re: Door vin plates
any and all tampering is the same crime.
So cut around them and wled... or drill rivits, and spend $$ for new ones.... either way, there's legal implications. |

If it EVER has to go through a vin inspection, for any reason, it would be found out. There are legal ways to change vin plates. Check with local dmv and or law enforcment for requirements. Frank

Re: Door vin plates
You guys make it sound like you can NEVER change a vin plate. I think through the proper channels you can legally. It probably has to be titled as a rebuild or something though. I'm in Tennessee and I think our laws are much more lax anyway. We don't even have vehicle inspections. I'm actually using neither of these cabs. I've got a nice one sitting in my dad's shop just waiting for me to get moving on this project. Both of these cabs are shot.

Re: Door vin plates
A VIN in the glovebox is 100% absolutely useless in the eyes of the law. The glovebox door is a removeable part and not considered a proper ID. Even if you don't have inspections, if you get into a wreck, Police officers (at least around here) write the VIN number off the VIN tag and not the paperwork. I would not even began building a truck unless I had it had a VIN tag. There have been true horror stories about people restoring vehicles only to find out they were stolen and have them seized and returned to the owner it was stolen from - no matter how much money you put into it. You could check to see if you're truck is correct by checking the VIN # on frame, but I'd still want the tag and would wonder why its gone. Just my nickel's worth of free advice...

Re: Door vin plates
Kind of a double edge sword. I have a title for the 72 cab that I put on my 68, but since the only change is the cab, I'm gonna put my 68 plate on it and call it good.

Re: Door vin plates
Been there done the VIN shuffle on Camaro's, and have been hassled in a big way with the car being impounded. Sheriff's could care less about your story about restoration, and will only look at you as a sneaky crimminal that is wasting their time.
Since then, if there is ANY doubt about the authenticity of the VIN I walk away. It's just not worth the hassles. You may like this song: But the guy with the badge n gun makin your day doesn't.

Wow. I didn't expect this thread to turn into this. I was just curious about the two different styles.

Re: Door vin plates
with no oficial von on your truck.... I would be scared.
Upon discovering it, you WILL lose your truck. You MIGHT get it back. A sticker on a glove box, and a partial stamping on the frame are not good enough. Just removing it is a huge fine in most, if not all, states. |
