Shackles popping

I have a 57 pickup with Jeep pickup running gear using the original leaf spring set up. When I'm parked and I turn left or right, I hear a popping sound that is coming from the spring shackles and it looks like springs are shifting within the shackles.

Have any of you had this happen and what did you do to fix it? I'm thinking new shackles, bushings, etc but I'm not sure what will fit the original springs.

It could be bad bushings or a broken through bolt.

It most likely needs bushings, you may also want to check the TRE for play as well, the last thing would be the bearings in the knockle, if you jack it up and the wheel tips in at the bottom you have a bad bearing, if you have open knuckles you may have a bad ball joint, cheers, Larry

could be bad ball joints as well. the sound can travel and resonate through the leaf springs and sound like that is where it is coming from. good luck diagnosing and eliminating the problem.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure it is the shackle, I can see the spring move within the shackle when the wheel is turned.

Anyone upgraded to better shackles on these, or is stock about the best option?

the length and angle of the shackel have more to do with articulation, you may just need to replace the bushings to take the slop out from between the shackel bolt to the mount, Larry

That's your problem,The shackles need to be tight against the inner sleeve of the bushings.If it runs very long it may elongate the bolt holes in the shackle or shear the bolts off.......At highway speed that would be ugly
