69 GMC shortbed budget build
I picked up this 69 GMC short bed out of a farm field for $300 a couple weeks ago. I was slowly slowly working on a 70 that is a total frame off resto. When I found this gem I figured it would be fun to rat it out a little and get it on the road with as little money as possible. I will try to keep a running tally on every piece I buy for this truck. The 6cyl is going and it will get a 3/5 static drop. I'm gonna break some rules because I want to keep it cheap but looking good. It will be a little unfair because I have alot of parts and a sb 350 and th350 just waiting to be put in something. The motor and trans was used in another vehicle but still has alot of life left in it. Here are some untouched pics

Re: 69 GMC shortbed budget build
I tore into this thing like crazy this week. I had intended to park it out back til winter but its funny how when you get it home you cant wait to start. I pulled out the floor mat, seat, 6 cyl and 3-speed. The best $80 spent was I rented a steam pressure washer and cleaned up the engine compartment, cab and underneath. The heated pressure washer melts away 40 years of sludge with ease. I rattle canned the engine compartment, I know the firewall should be the body color but it looked rough and I dont plan on getting t ofancy with firewall detail. Satin black hides alot, steamed cleaned the 350, th350 and rattle canned that also. I got the engine and trans dropped in put on some of the accessories and headers.
$80 steam pressure washer $29 motor mount towers $20 spray paint $54 hoses, trans mount, misc gaskets $64 oil, filters, spark plugs, solenoid, & more rattle cans $110 Summit headers and pulley $5 card cleaner $225 3/5 drop coils, retainers and bolts |

Re: 69 GMC shortbed budget build
It was in a 65 impala that I bought last year. According to the numbers on the block it is out of a 1970 car. It had been rebuilt by the po but no idea what's in it. It ran good and pretty strong in the Impala. But I put a new motor in that.
I just hosed it down, put new valve cover gaskets on it and rattle canned it. |

Re: 69 GMC shortbed budget build
If I look from the front they are higher than the lower control arms. I am putting 3" drop coils in the front 5" out back. When I get in in my garage to put the drop coils in I will get a better idea and willl post a couple pics underneath then.

Re: 69 GMC shortbed budget build
I'm 2 weeks into this and have made quite a bit of headway. I will slow down quite a bit when I get to the body. There are alot dings and dents in this thing but hey it was $300. I got the 350 up and running. Nothing better than open headers!! Swapped out the doors and cowl with others I had. They are not perfect but alot better than what was on it. Also I got the 3/5 drop springs. I got those installed Wow thats the best $225 spent. Shipped to my door for that price with bolts and retainer cups also. Here are a couple pics.
