ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
Ok heres the idea minus money and time its more of can this be done with out causing me to go insane (anymore then i already am for thinking of this)
Take one 1965 short bed fleet (leave the body all stock) gonna have to tub this but still want wood floor just causes then take one GMC trash truck (yes i have one laying around) take oh i dont know the big block 427 out with the trans install into truck (most likely will need a custom frame) this is what i do know the deck on a truck motor sits higher then that of a car why i really not sure but i know it can be made into a torque machine with what i was told was a cam but not sure (big blocks are new to me) The trans yeah that more for fun if i could find something to use instead ok thats fine but in all ideas is this able to be done. or has it please make fun its ok i know its a crazy dumb idea but heck if i have the parts sitting right

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
with low900rr.....BB drop right in as the frame is the same thru 72, generally speaking.
The weird thing is the truck 427. Tall deck motor has an extra ring and super tall piston. Those engines also may have a gear driven cam/distributor set-up that has reverse rotation. They use a different intake manifold to cover the extra 1.5(roughly) of stroke.

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
I find it hard to follow your post, but I think I get the idea, however, I am not sure what is so "out-there" with installing a big block in a 4-5-6 Chevy truck, let alone creating a torque monster. GM did this with the 292 High Torque six cylinder and the SM420 or SM465 in the '60-'66 Chevy trucks, hence the name stump-puller.
In any case, keep us posted on your zany ideas and we'll see where it goes. Last edited by LILRED66; 02-26-2009 at 12:26 AM. |

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
I think what he`s getting at is putting the tall deck bbc in a regulat truck. not that much trouble these days. Alot of guys are running tall decks in cars so putting one in a truck isn`t a big deal. The problems with the tall decks are the pistons. I don`t remember which way it is, possibly both but if you use a longer rod then you can use regular pistons. Might be the longer stroke you can use regualr pistons but I`m leanign towards the rods. I`m not a bbc guy so I don`t pay too much atention to them. If the trans in the garbage truck is a automatic then it`s a th400 and that will bolt in your truck too. good luck.

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
well true to bb have been put in but just thinking the tall deck motor might be odd as for the trans its manual 5 or 6 speed have no idea didnt actually go through the gears.

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
No problem with the BBC in the truck and the tall deck is even better because you can use a the 4.375 Crank to make 540 CI......

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
cool if makeing the big block fit wont be all that hard then this should be alot easier then.
and thx for the tip on the 540 might just have do that. one more thing i plan to get the truck as low as i can to the ground with out body droping the truck. the reason for the build is simple enough the truck is my great granddads the motor is from my grandfathers trash truck. and to build it all will come from what my dad has taught me so far. its a memorial truck to all three now to just find the time to get it started with all the other projects i got

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
Would the tall deck big block bolt up to a TH400 from a 350 ?
Does someone make headers to fit a it in a 65 ? |

Re: ONE really crazy idea but really can it be done
Yes the TH400 will bolt up. I am not sure about the headers with the tall deck.

Putting a tall deck BB in a '65 most likely will require moving the engine ahead some to clear the firewall. Definitely doable.
