700r4 electronic to mech speedo conv.
I could use some guidance here. I have a 700r4 with the elecrtonic speedo and I want to convert to mechanical. When I removed the tailshaft housing, there is a ring gear and some type of metal spacer or guard for the front yoke from the drive shaft. My question is are these pieces pressed on or is there another method of removal, and can it be retro-fitted with the plastic ring gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The plastic gear on the tailshaft is held on by a plastic clip and the gear thing on the side of the tailshaft housing unbolts and pulls right out. I still need to do the stuff in the second link too... my speedo reads about 9% too slow and with the correct plastic gears, it should be dead on. My truck is a runner and I hate to take it back apart just to make the speedo correct, but you have a chance to do that now

The electronic metal ring (reluctor ring?) is pressed on and takes a special tool to pull. A plastic speedo gear will go on after you get that one off.

I did this also and its not as easy as it sounds. the electric reluctor gear on the shaft is a BEAR to take off. I didnt have access to the extra long puller that is needed so I had to "shimmy" the gear by hammer and extension a little bit at a time so as not to damage the shaft until I moved it enough to use the 8" puller to work it the rest of the way off. then to install the plastic gear I actually had to gently work it up the shaft by using a plastic hobby hammer. Patience!!!
Try heating the metal gear before working it off to expand it

You should be able to buy and or order the pieces from your local Chevrolet dealer's parts counter but it helps to be armed with the info you need when you go. |
