Upgrading 1/2 ton front to 3/4 ton

Hey all, so my truck has a 3/4 ton rear end on it, but it still has the original 1/2 ton front end on it. How do I Upgrade it to a matching 3/4 ton front end? Thanks

A arms, springs, and spindles for sure maybe tie rod ends too.

I would first ask the question: why? Are you planning on hauling heavy stuff or abusing the axle? On my Jeep (1980 CJ7) I took the approach of upgrading parts once I broke them.

Anyway, you have several different front axle options. Confirm the frame sizes didn't change from 67-87 on 4WD (I know they didn't for 2WD). After that you have lots of good options. You get your choice of a 10-bolt front axle, a Dana 44 and a Dana 60.

The 60s where found on full ton trucks and are about the best axle out there. Expect to spend about $1,000 to get one either in good shape or to rebuild one that you find a "deal" on.

The Dana 44 and 10-bolt are about the same strength. They will both handle 35" offroad so long as you don't really beat on it. While several bolt patterns exist for these, you shouldn't have problems finding an 8 lug.

If the 73-87 front axles are the right width, you shouldn't have any problems doing this swap. Doing a front axle is really easy, just remove the brake lines and front driveshaft. Jack up the frame (Use an engine hoist through the frame if you have one, it'll give you the clearance you need to roll the axle out of the front). Then unbolt the u-bolts and the axle will fall free.

Reverse the procedure to bolt in the new axle. Keep a couple friends around to help move axles, they weight about 400lbs.

His introduction thread was for a 4WD truck, so I'm guessing thats the application. Your advice is correct for a 2WD truck.
