First post and need some help... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am working on my great-grandfathers (then grandfathers then my) '67 Chevy C-10. It is a "heavy-half" and grandpa always called it a "Thrift Package". From what I understand this means it has the helper springs and a Chevy 230. I know grandpa dropped in 1/4" diamond plate for a truck bed (he hated the wood) but left all the wood and parts underneath...I am certain it is all rotted away.

I remember being driven everywhere by grandpa in it until he parked it in the late '70s. I spent the better half of my teen years dreaming of getting it running again. In '89 or so I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket and had it running. My uncle used it to start his business in the early '90s and then parked it. Grandpa died in '99 and left me the truck. I can say that little (aside from oil changes, belts, hoses, and a new alternator) has been done to it. It still has the tires he bought to put on it in the '70s...

I started dissassembly in '00 and parked it in my garage when I was hit with other responsibilities. Anyway I am ready to start again and need help. I am looking at a very long term project (possibly 5-10 years). The doors, and hood are removed; but, I don't know how to remove the fenders or grille. Once I get it to this point, I will be looking at a full frame off restore (acid dip/galvanize the frame, etc). I have done this to a few Jeeps...but am very new to the C-10 world. Any advice? Any threads I can follow for those who have already done this?

check out the many build threads on the board..they contain most anything your asking and more...also check out the faq section...alot of good stuff in there aswell and good luck getting er up and pretty again

I've never had any problem taking anything apart, it's the putting back together that gets me. Of course I was a pretty destructive child!

A Factory Assembly Manual might be good to have.

take plenty of pictures during your deconstruction and reconstruction, they will help you remember what went where, and of course the before and after shots...

and we love to see pics posted here! good luck, and also check out the FAQ section on the board

Hey Thoma....First, WELCOME to the best 67-72 board around.....
I agree with Sinister....here's the cover of it so you know what you're looking for....runs about $35-40....has really good exploded views of lots of assembly.....good luck and have fun!!!....Also, I'd suggest doing searches, or referring to the FAQ thread (see my signature for the link) for loot of how-tos....Also, support our board vendors when you can (a link in my signature as well)

Welcome and I agree with the others on the the assembly manual. I would love to give some advice on removing the front clip but I cheated since my sheet metal was all bad and used a sawzall. By the way we love pics around here the more the better

Thanks, I love the way this place feels already. I will hit the board heavy tonight and see what I can read about. Thanks for the advice on the assembly manual. I have some pictures floating around...but will have to figure out how to get them on here (again, will read more tonight).

Get yourself a catalog from LMC trucks for 67
to 72 chevy trucks. They have some great breakdowns and illustrations on the truck bodies and sheetmetal. You can go to their website and order one for free.
BTW did you title the truck in your name after your GP passed away? Also welcome to the board. If you click on user CP at the top of the thread and go their and click on edit signiture, then put in the main details about your truck, it will help a lot when you post questions on the boards. Look at some of the other guys posts and you'll see what I mean. HAND

I agree on the LMC catalog,, I've got a couple of those,, but of course we have some great board venders here if you need parts!
