Built some fiberglass speaker pods

Built some kick panels to hold some 6.5" components . I made the backer out and floor backer out of 1/4" MDF .. Built some 7" - 3/4" MDF Speakers rings and I used paint stir sticks to space the ring out like I wanted. Stretched felt over the form and stapled it down. Soaked it in resin, smeared it with Dyna glass reinforced bodyfiller .. sanded smooth, primed and here it is test fitted before I vinyl it and install the mids and tweets.
If you want more pics let me know or if any questions?

Re: Built some fiberglass speaker pods

I used to do a lot of car audio crap back when it was a CRAZE , but anymore seems like no one is in to it. These are felt, soaked in fiberglass resin and when the resin tacked up, I smeared them in reinforced bodyfiller. While the mud was tacky, I knocked them down with 45 grit and then used regular bodyfiller on it - sanded with 80, then 180 and then primed. I was going to paint them is why I sanded down to 180 and primed them. If your going to vinyl wrap them or bedline or texture coat them knock them down with 45 to smooth the resin-felt and reinfoced filler down and you can vinyl or texture that and it will still look real nice.

Honestley, as small as they are, I should of just smeared the reinforced bodyfiller over the felt and that would of been good enough. Its not like your putting 1000watt Jl audio amp on some 6.5" speakers .. lol ... They'll hold up real good.

On mine soaked in resin and then bondo'd .. I can honestley stand on them, they won't break. Then again - Im 185 lbs ... If your 300lbs, maybe not stand on them .. lol

If there's a need for them I can make up about 5 - 10 sets of them if people are interested for their trucks.

DON'T FLAG THIS POST!!! I'm not advertising!! or selling!!
Just wanted to post some pictures of what i did and get some feedback.

after they were done I reinforced the joints on some of it inside the form with dynaglass long strand reinforced bodyfiller just so the fiberglass doesnt seperarate or crack out from the wood.

Very nice work... My sound system is mounted between the frame rails just forward of the cab. It really gives you a thrill when you push down on the right pedal....

Re: Built some fiberglass speaker pods

These pods look great! How did you mount them?

Do you ever take your truck to Wichita? I would like to see these projects in person sometime. I don't get over to Hutchinson often.

Re: Built some fiberglass speaker pods

can you elaberate on the "felt" that you used? I've heard of people using felt, headliner, mesh fabric - what is it officially called and where can we buy it.
