tilt column help
have a standard tilt column. shift lever wont lock into place.
is there a spring or sometime behind it to hold pressure against it when you shift. any pix would sure help.. thanks |

If you pull back on the lever does it spring forward? If not pull the lever and check the spring that is installed into the housing at the opening where the shift lever comes out.
If the spring is ok then the detent is worn or the shift lever is worn where it contacts the detent. Jim

I agree with above. I just replaced the detent spring in mine because I munched it when I replaced the shift lever. Does it lock in to place when you manually push the lever forward? if so, it's the spring. if not it's the other. The spring is easy to replace, but tough to find. Just make sure you use a small screwdriver to keep from destroying it (like I did) when you put the lever back in. Good luck. Cnut

when you say "standard" I assume you mean "conventional automatic". most of the time it is the spring that goes bad. look in the above pic near the bottom center, above the bowl is the spring. up a little ways you see the plate which is retained by the two screws. although rare this can get worn out from people not pulling the lever far enough.
