Exclamation Starter bolts, what size??? need help asap..

I have a 71 pickup, and it has the 350 4 barrel carb setup. A few days ago, the starter tweaked itself and got locked to the flywheel. I unbolted it and removed it, and turns out it is bad.

I bought a new starter, and I really don't wish to use the old bolts, as they had so many washers on them it wasn't funny. I looked at what autozone had and they had 2 lengths...one would make it through the starter, and the other had a good inch or so of thread showing. I bought those, and they are too long. I really don't want to shim it with washers like the PO did.

Any thoughts?

Josh

I beleive that the older 350 motors had about 3 different length starter bolts. I keep some extras from old motors around in the shop as they are prone to break too.

I don't know what size your bolts are but I do know they are tapered near the bolt head. If the PO put on bolts that where too long and just shimmer them out with washers that is probably the reason the starter turned and hit the flexplate in the first place. One of the auto parts stores has got to have them. Autozone has a huge stock of HELP brand products. I bet they have them. Worst case hit the junkyard.
