Re: will everything from my 72 disc go onto my 68 drum without buying anything else?

Easiest way would be to swap the entire front cross member. The upper arms are slightly different between drum & disc front end. Ehere the lines hook up. Other than that I think everything else will easily wasp over. But to do it right take everything from the later model and put on the 68.

and yes the swap the booster, proportioning vale and all from the 72 over to the 68

youll also need to swap the front brake lines if you dont want to buy new ones, and yes the booster will bolt right up but be sure and use the longer push rod tht bolts to the brake pedal assy.

Thank you, that was the one thing I forgot about for the swap.

the longer push rod from the 72?

step 1: take booster/mc off 72
step 2: put mc booster on 68
step 3: take spindle assembly off 72
step 4: put spindle ass. on 68
step 5: put ?NEW? lines on 68, what lines do i get?

Push rod is the rod from the brake pedal to the MC/booster.

Get lines for a 72,

Re: will everything from my 72 disc go onto my 68 drum without buying anything else?

If I remember right, the lower ball joints and outer tie rods on the 67-69 trucks will not work correctly with the 71-72 spindles. You will also need the front brake hoses. I'd recommend new ones (I actually recommend new "everything"). If you use the 67-69 lower control arms you will need to trim the "tit" on the spindle or you will not get a full lock to lock turning radius. You'll see what I mean once you get everything installed. Grind slowly and check the lock to lock turn often.

It really is "better" to just swap the whole damn thing

Re: will everything from my 72 disc go onto my 68 drum without buying anything else?

I think the reason that they're suggesting swapping the entire crossmember is that when you just swap the spindles your track width gets wider. If you put the entire crossmember from the disc truck under it you shouldn't have an issue. I'm also pretty sure that 71-72 spindles will fit the ball joints and tie rods of trucks from the early 60's through 70. (My old spindles from the C10 are currently rolling on a 64 pickup). The problem is when you try to put 73 and up spindles on a 70 or older pickup. I'm pretty sure that is when you're going to have ball joint/tie rod issues. A slightly wider track width shouldn't be to much of an issue unless you plan on lowering your truck.

Disclaimer: I've never converted one from drums to discs! I do know people that have. It made their track width wider and caused their tires to scrub when lowered. That's where we got the front springs for my brothers drop we just did. Swapped a set of stockers back in for a buddy to keep from eating up his tires with the fenders.

Re: will everything from my 72 disc go onto my 68 drum without buying anything else?

I thought the upper ball joints were the same, but LMC is listing a different part number for upper ball joints as well. According to LMC (I checked the advance site too) they list different part #'s for the upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends for 67-70 trucks and 71-72 trucks. Whether they are actually different or not, I do not know, but two different sources list different part #'s.

My truck was such a mix and match. I used an entire set up off of a 71 GMC I pulled from a yard, the complete suspension, brake lines, power booster, prop valve, and steering box, but after I got the mud pressure washed off the suspension I found the PS lower A-arm had some damage (looks like they hit a stump with it?) so I had to swap my 67-69 Arms, that's how I know about the spindle tit. The steering bump stops are different. When I rebuilt the suspension, I asked for "all 72" parts when I bought everything.

That's nice to know about the cross member, I never knew that was the reason behind the suspensions sticking out on some trucks and not others. I'm really glad I swapped the whole cross member then!

Guess we'll need some more confirmation on whether or not the parts interchange.
