Welding rear passenger upper shock mount...?

Should I make sure my life insurance policy is paid up before trying this? The rear upper shock mount on my passenger side is reamed out, and needs to be welded back in place. Its about 3" from the hard line to the gas tank, and since I haven't drawn a bead since about 1987 I am a little nervous about welding with my dad's old MIG on top of a gas line.

Has anyone recently done this weld? What did you do to keep from blowing yourself up?

I didn't go look under my blazer to see what you're talking about but I would wedge something imbetween the line and shock mount, like a piece of plywood, or if you have it some sort of fire proof blanket or an old welding jacket.

If you're really that concerned take the time and drop the tank. Look at it this way. If you were to blow something up, you're gonna look back while you're laying in the hospital bed saying, " damn, I should've just dropped the tank".

lots and lots of sprint car guys and junk yard fellers around here and ended up very screwed up or dead from that same crap i wouldnt do it for nuthin

Take it to the shop, A 50 welding bill is cheaper than any hospital or insurance pmnt.

People are injured seriously or killed all the time by welding or cutting near gasoline. Its not a good way to die.
Disasymble and move the line...and use wet rags to isolate the area.
Better yet, if this mount is riveted on, remove the rivets with a 4 1/2" grinder and bolt on a new (junkyard) mount. That would be stronger than welding.
