So I am almost done the box on my 71. Should I assemble it before I paint it? I think it would be better that way it won't get scratched during assembly

I`d panel paint it and be careful.You can always hit it again once it`s assembled if you muff it up.You can assemble it loosely with paper between the panels and pull it out when it`s time to tighten up.

when I had my old GMC painted the box was painted off the frame and also that way the rear of the cab wass painted as well. just have to be very carefull when re-asssembling.

when I did mine I blew in all of the panels before assembling....after that I assembled the bed and painted the inside of the bed....then taped off the inside and painted the outside.....after all was dry I put the bed back on the frame.....painted tailgate seperate.....worked out well for me with no damage during assembly......just had 4 guys put the assembled bed in place on the frame when all complete....good luck with it......

is your truck a gmc with a chevy clip

im going to prime everything then stick everything back on the truck but doors... then paint the jams and interior side of doors then stick then back on then paint the exterior

If you put it together primed,then paint,you will have no paint to protect the most vulnerable areas to hold moisture/rust.I`d expect to see rust bleed coming from seams.Seam sealer will stop that,but also trap moisture in there.I would suggest doing as knsmodels did for best results.

I have no experience, but have been trolling various forums for a long time so disregard as desired. From that "experience" I'd guess the process is ideally as follows:

Rough body work (welding, dents, etc.)
Disassemble if not done
Blast
Seal w/ good 2k sealer
Rage filler
Primer
Block sand, Block, Block
Color on "jambs" or areas covered when assembled
Finish bottom as desired or not
Assemble
Color on all or only front bulkhead and maybe bottom
Mount on frame
Color
Clear as desired

This is assuming the bed goes on after the cab, and obviously some basic steps have been left out and/or forgotten by the halfwit poster (meaning me before anyone swings).

Maybe somewhere in there should be a line about wax or otherwise sealing the inside of the bed walls and bed sides.

Feel free to disagree and suggest a different order since I'm just fantasizing/nightmaring about the process, but I am thinking about it...
