My 79 Build...

I'm new to the site and thought I would put up a build on my 79 Silverado. Just to get everyone up to speed I'll tell a little about it. My wifes uncle owned this truck from 87 until about a month ago when I bought it from him. It was all original. The only thing that had ever been changed on it was the sliding rear glass and a chrome tip put on the exhaust. When I got the truck it needed alot of clean up and repair but ran great and drove unbelievable. You cant tell by the paint but the truck was taken really good care of. As soon as I got the truck I tore into fixing everything that was tore up and fix up some things I wanted done to it. Here's some pics of what I've done.

The day I brought it home...

New Fuel Pump

New Alternator

Repainted the taillights...

Knocked a dent out the fender and replaced the marker light...

New MAgnaflow w/chrome tip....

Repainted the grille and painted the headlight bezels...

Repainted the wheels and refinished the center caps...

Change the steering wheel for a 92 leather wrapped one...

Redone the headliner....

I've still got alot to do but I think I'm off to a good start. Let me know what you think....

As of right now my plans are to completely change the interior to black, lower 2" all around, repaint factory midnight black, and possibly some 20" wheels. Of course there will be alot of little stuff in there as well but that's the main stuff. I've talked with a local guy that just bought a 76 that has a cowl hood and he wants a factory hood so I may be trading with him. Wouldn't that be nice? We'll see.

Re: My 79 Build...

Made some progress last night. I took the chrome tailgate protector off the truck, new pcv valve, new breather filter, got the rust off the shifter and turn signal switch, and the big thing is that we got the front bumper straightened out. You can see how tweaked it was in the first picture of this thread. Believe it or not you cant even tell that it was bent. Here's some pics.

May be a little bit before I get it lowered. Will have to get a time when me and a buddy of mine can get it in his shop. There's a bulldozer and a tractor in it right now. As soon as there done I should be able to get it in. Gonna try and get a front and rear sway bar off a 1 ton truck in the local bone yard before I do the drop. Gonna add the sway bars, cut the front coils, add the rear shackles, and change the front brake pads all at one time if I can. As well as paint all the suspension and frame.

Re: My 79 Build...

I used 3M Spray Adhesive on the headliner. Worked pretty good. I was surfing the net and found this pic today of the 79 at a local car show.

Re: My 79 Build...

Been a couple of weeks since I updated this. I got the truck back last night after it sitting for two weeks. I drove it to work today and so far this morning I've gotten the new air cleaner tube put on and got the new tag put on. I kind of like the new tag. The wife picked it out. Should be getting together some more parts first of next week. We'll see.

Re: My 79 Build...

It's been about a month since I added anything to this thread. I've had alot going on and haven't been able to work on the truck. I got the gauges and gauge bezel redone and got the steering column paint. I pretty happy with how it turned out.

Re: My 79 Build...

Haven't posted here in a while. Just got the truck back a couple of days ago. It has been sitting at my wifes grandmothers for about 4 months. I hope I can get back to work on it here soon. Just been driving it for the past couple of days. Excited about getting back on this project. I've got V/C gaskets, intake gaskets, cast iron 4 barrel intake, Holley 4 barrel, door hinge pins and bushings, door strikers, tune-up parts, lowering shackels, blue dots, and a few other small things just sitting at the house ready to get to work. Hopefully I will have some updates soon.....

Re: My 79 Build...

Where did you pick up the tube for the air cleaner and also you painted your gauge bezel that way? or is it just stock and still that nice.

The tube for the air cleaner I bought here at work. I work for a dealer. Believe it or not I can still get some parts. It's coming up with the part number on things that can become the problem. As far as the gauge bezel thats a lengthy story. The original one had the aluminum inlay in it and it was tarnished and stained pretty bad. I tried to clean it up and needless to say I trashed it. I bought the one thats in it from the junk yard and cleaned it up, painted it black and then striped it in the silver. Easy and cheap.

If you need any parts give me a call up here. I work at Champion Chevrolet. I can still get some stuff for these trucks.

Re: My 79 Build...

The gauge bezel looks good, you have the part number for the tube so i can call the local dealership and see if they have any, how much you get it for?
