Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
I have swapped my cab over from a 71 frame to a 68. I have seen where some suspension parts have different part #'s between the years. I did this to go from a lwb to a swb. I still want to keep the same look with the 71 fenders/hood. Mainly I see different part #'s in the upper/lower control arms up front. Thanks

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
The differance in parts # is going from drum brakes to disk brakes. the a arms are differant for the disk brakes. the ball joints are differant

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
The core support mounts are different. You`ll need to go with the frame year.

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
Is there a way that I can make new mounts for the core supports and then all the fenders/etc will line up? Thanks

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
the 67 - 70 frame is also heavier and weaker than a 71/72 frame.

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
Did you also switch the suspension. I believe you could order a '68 core support mounting hardware, and install the '71 clip on the frame ( IIRC the difference is the size of the holes etc. not a different mounting point). ppl switch out front clips all the time...

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
yep, new steel.
GM said the old frames were not recomended to be drilled on, but the 71/72 frames you were OK to drill into. I have a dealers letter from GMC corp. stating this. |

Re: Difference between 68 and 71 Frames
I did transfer the front and rear suspensions over. I did have one bolt in the front that was a little off. Everything else has bolted up without a problem. As of now its a rolling chassis with the cab sitting on it. I guess as I continue on I will find out if there are any other problems. I will try ordering all new suspension for a 71. Hopefully I will not have any probelms. Thanks for all info.

I have that book out in front of me right now, and it doesn't say how much lighter. Sorry.
