Re: donors

He gave a good answer.

73-87 gives the front suspension, steering, and rearend with some mods.

In 88, lots of stuff changed. The suspension no longer interchanges, or the steering.

I'm using an 80 model as my donor.

Re: donors

my search feature at the top of the page is not working. is this only 73-87 chevy trucks or most chevy cars and trucks within those years. i have heard that a cavalierfront end will bolt right up but i need more info than just an "i think it will". could i possibly get a short list of good donor vehicles.
thanks josh

Re: donors

are you using the blue theme, if so that is your problem....switch to the gray theme and all will be right again...
I would knee jerk react and think that whom ever told you cavalier doesn't have a clue...they are front wheel drive, correct???
73-87 gives you all kinds of options and they are cheap and plentiful...

BTW...I graduated from Stratford

Re: donors

ah front wheel drive, now i feel like an idiot for even mentioning that one. so as long as it is rear wheel driven and between 73-87 it might work. thanks for the info, off to search ebay.
thanks

Re: donors

'73-87 1/2 ton trucks if you want 5 lug, 3/4 if you want 8 lug, and the crew cabs and suburbans up to '91.
you can get a '71-72 1/2 ton 5lug axle that is pretty much a blot in, jut a bit wider

Re: donors

Thanx Joe, I didnt think of the 71-72. They also work equally well but may have a couple parts that are more rare(= more $). Somewhere along the way, roughly 1980, you will start getting into metric parts, FYI.

You dont have to correct anything....just watch your wheel offset/backspace.

Re: donors

Wheel offset/backspacing is referring to the distance from where the wheel bolts to the axle flange, to the inside lip of the wheel. If you use a differential that is a different width, you may need to use wheels that have a particular or special backspacing.

Re: donors

first off...are you looking for bolt in?
you can do practically anything if you have the time, money, and patients.
I don't think the column will be an easy swap, but the seats may fit....

Re: donors

That column and it's airbag are worth enough coin to buy a nice tilt column for your truck that will basically fit without any mods.

Re: donors

1.5 inches wider.

Don't sweat it though, the front end with disc brakes is also 1.5 inches wider too.

It's a non issue really. Just compensate by running an extra 1/2 inch of backspacing on your wheel choice and all is a moot point.

Re: donors

i have a 72 rear axle in my truck i was going to narrow it a couple inches on each side to make clearance for wider tires and get aftermarket axles
but i will just get a 60-66 axle

I will add that you can do most anything you want if you have the tools and the skills to use them. If you're looking for easy power windows, then I don't think those would work. The seats on the otherhand may not bee too hard to mount. There are currently a couple of threads on here regarding newer seats in these trucks.
