bad battery?

ok so... i turn the key on and the heater fan turns on and the headlights come on. BUT when i try to start it it might try to turn over and if it doesnt try itl make like a "buzz" noise down around the starter. i checked all the conections at the starter and everything is tight. also when the starter is buzzing the tach regesters about 400-600. that is run through the 6al mallory box i have. i dont understand why it would say anything if not starting... is the battery just weak or is the starter going? or is it somthing else?

Re: bad batery?

1. Check the battery connections. On each end of the cables.
2. Check the battery voltage if you have a multimeter.
3. If you have a battery charger, charge the battery for a few hours an see what happens.
4. It may be that your solenoid or starter are gunnybags.
5. you might try having a helper turn the key to start while you take a good sized hammer and give the starter a couple of good wacks on the bottom side to see if it will start when the armature bounces. If it does, the bushings in the starter are worn out. You can either replace the starter or take yours apart and rebuild it. Brushes and bushings are about 10 bucks at NAPA. That will work unless the armature has thrown solder at the soldered connections.

Re: bad batery?

Try a new starter bendix. (the thing that engages the starter gear to the flywheel teeth)

Re: bad batery?

the starter might be too tight against the flexplate. when its like that it tends to act like its a low battery

Re: bad batery?

Sounds like a battery. Put a charger on it for a few mins and see if it kicks off then.

Re: bad batery?

does this happen when the engine is hot or cold. If hot, then my money is on the bendex spring is worn out and weak

Re: bad batery?

checking connections is not anywhere near effective as taking apart and cleaning connections unless you're the guy with exray vision

Re: bad batery?

well the truck has been siting for a few weeks and i got it to start 2 times. i had it hooked up to jumper cables to another truck. that took a really long time to get it to start. for a long time while it was hooded up it would turn over 1 time and then nothin. then all of a sudden it fired up perfectly fine. so i took it to the gas station and filled up and it fired right up again. so i figured it was fixed then i tried it a few days later same thing(wouldnt start). and before anyone askes all powered every thing was off (lights etc.) is the bendix spring the one in the soloniod?

bendix spring is what pushes the gear that mates with your flywheel.
