Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
I have seen some truck with a HD hood and they look cool as Hell. My question is do you have to change anything to run this hood?
Thanks, Trav

Re: Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
There is a guy here in town that is running it on his. Next time I see him I'll ask him what all he had to do. I know the grill on my cousin's 02 HD a little taller than the grill on a stock 02. Don't know if it's because of the bumper, or because of the bumper.

Re: Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
I have a 99-02 Silverado and would LOVE to know this info as well. The tall front deck of the HD hoods looks a lot like a 67 hood.

The guy here in town that has it looks really cool. It's one of those things that you look at, and have to think what is different.

Re: Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
Nothing special needs to be done. The 2001 & 2002 HD hoods fit right on to a 1999 through 2002 non-HD without any modifications to the latches, grill or bumper.
The raised HD style hood (both HD and non-HD) from 2005 & 2006 also fit 2003-2004 non-HD without any modifications as well. To make things confusing, 2003 & 2004 HD hoods were the same as non-HD’s (low hoods) while 2005 and 2006 HD and non-HD had the raised hood.

Re: Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
Talked to the guy and that's what he said. Nothing done besides changing hoods. He said if you put the HD bumper on, then you had to change the grille, but not for the hood. Hope this helps ya out. It is a really cool looking mod.

BUT you are wrong about the newer hoods. 2003 and 2004 there was absolutely no difference between HD and non HD hoods and grilles. The only difference was the taller bumper cap on the HDs to overcome the 2" body raise. 2005 The HD got the taller HD grille, and a different grille.. While the hood will fit onto 03-05 non HDs it will not fit the grille properly, although the HD grille can also be swapped to make it work. In 06 and 07 the half tons also got the same grille and hood as the 05 HD. There was never a GMC HD hood made. All 01-07 GMC 2500HDs shared the exact same hood as the half tons. BUT, the Chevy hood will bolt right on, and match the grille BUT it will not match the headlights. You must cut out the shape of the headlights into the front of the hood, and leave a little extra material over to bend over and weld in the seam. If you are really interested in the swap, a member Bgray on gmfullsize.com did the swap and it came out amazing, I always wanted to do the swap if I ever got the $$ to do a full repaint on my 03 GMC. But also on the topic of GMCs, a 03-07 GMC grille will fit right onto the older 99-02, and updates the look of the front end in my opinion. Also in the case of a 99-02 truck, if you install a 2" body lift and don't use the front bumper raise brackets, the HD grille and bumper cap fit right on. Re: Anyone runing a HD hood on 1/2 tone?
Good info in this thread.
I have a 2003 K2500HD and wondered if the correct hood was on it... I have the low/flat hood. My brother has a 2006 K1500 and his has the tall raised hood. The posts above, confirm everything is correct. Here is my 03 HD: Last edited by Yullose; 06-11-2009 at 10:18 PM. |
