difference in bb and sb

My truck originally had a small block in it and i am planning on putting in a 402 bb. What is the difference in the power steering? Mine has the original sb power steering stuff?

Re: difference in bb and sb

what year is your truck? '68's and older where driver's side alternators and 69 up were pass side. When I put my 460 in my '68, I used this time to convert to long water pump and alt on the pass side. Made it easier to add power steering. Not sure if SBC and BBC used the same pumps or not.....but you will at least need BBC brackets.

where is your alt? It's cool because you can still get the brackets through Chevy. I got the mid 70's style pump and it was a breeze.

Im not sure. Aint looked at in a while. Its a bone stock 402 out of 71 gmc 3/4. I thought the power steering pump was mounted on to the frame? Hows it work?

No...it's mounted to the motor. The gearbox is what's mounted to the frame.....hang on....baby crying....

Re: difference in bb and sb

If it's out of a 71 it should be a long water pump and a pass side alt. Easy to put on pump (not saying the other was is not easy....this is all I know). The only thing that I can't answer and someone else will is if the small and big blocks used the same pump. I picked mine up for $20 so either way it will be an easy conversion. I paid under $50 for both my brackets brand new. Gearbox is the same either way.

Re: difference in bb and sb

Truck pump should have a remote reservoir up on the driver side fender if stock, but any B.B. power steering pump will work. The brackets are different from sb to bb

Re: difference in bb and sb

Originally through 72 the alt. is on the drivers side. Hart rods pic shows a correct set-up. The long water pumps came later for the trucks i believe.

Re: difference in bb and sb

all V8 engines in 67 - 72 trucks had the shrot pump.
All small blocks always had the alt on the drivers side, and power steering mounted below it.
All big blocks were the same.
None of the brackets interchainge small block to big block

LHM to the rescue again... Thanks for clarifying... For a moment I thought my whole engine was a** backwards!

Re: difference in bb and sb

Holy cow! I was assuming that GM made the switch to the cars and trucks. I'm a Camaro guy 1st, formost and always. Sorry to steer you wrong. The info I gave you was for cars. I'd take that remote crap and throw it as far as you can. Looks like a$$. Actually, I sold mine on ebay for a ton of money and went with the pump and res in one. Much easier and cleaner. Once again...sorry to confuse. I have to run upstairs now and tell my wife I was wrong for once in my life......she will be pleased!!!!!! lol

Re: difference in bb and sb

LOL!
There are a few things on the trucks that were not done the same as cars.
And, whith the exception of the corvette, you are absolutly right.

The remote power steering is a good set up becouse it is very difficult for the 'average joe' to fill it up/top it off. The average joe wouoldn't have a real long/small funnel like most of us do, so it would be quite difficult to fill without making a mess or over filling.
